White House Summit on Working Families LIVE Today 9 a.m. ET from Washington DC

Family

Ever since I was invited to spend the day at the White House, I've been inspired to share with readers all about the family focused communications MommyBlogExpert often receives from the Oval Office and other government agencies and officials in Washington D.C.  Several weeks ago you may recall this MBE post on a White House Father's Day message acknowledging how much harder today's fathers work outside and inside the home than previous generations.

A few pictures I took during my visit to the White House in December...

Last night a new email from Washington arrived in my mailbox. This latest White House message states boldly that it's not the Leave it to Beaver 1960s anymore. I couldn't agree with that more, having been raised as a black and white TV watching Baby Boomer. Yet in 2014 even though we now live in a Modern Family society, most moms and dads still aren't getting access to paid leave or flexible work options that would be beneficial to their family and home lives.

Consider the sobering statistics. In 63% of today's families with children both parents work (approximately 3 out of 5 families). Another major reality: 32% of families with children are single-parent households. And, speaking of solo parents, 6 in 10 women are now the sole breadwinners for their families. The impact of all this on the present status of the American working family is obviously huge.

The time is now to start changing all that simply because we owe it to our kids, who collectively represent the future of America. That's what this summit is all about.

More on the Working Families Summit
The summit taking place on June 23, 2014 is being hosted by the White House, the Department of Labor (DOL) and the Center for American Progress (CAP). The purpose of the event is to set an agenda for this century's workplace that supports the American Family with a special focus on women and their children. Among issues that the summit will address are things like workplace flexibility, equal pay regardless of gender, workplace discrimination, worker retention and promotion, and childcare and early child education.

You're invited to join me in watching The White House Summit on Working Families LIVE this morning on your computer or smartphone wherever you may be. The online event starts at 9 a.m. Eastern Time so I'll be up bright and early at 6 a.m. here in California.
