As a Baby Boomer and avid reader I've had extensive exposure to books in the spiritual and self-help categories during every decade from my teens to the present. To name just a few --These have included life-changing reads such as Man's Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl (1959), I'm OK, You're Ok by Thomas Anthony Harris (1969), The Seat of the Soul by Gary Zukav (1989), Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus by John Gray, (1992), and The Girls From Ames by Jeffrey Zaslow (2009). Joining that list of favorite books richly influencing the true purpose of life is The Power of the Heart by Baptist de Pape (2014) which will be released by Atria Books, a Division of Simon & Schuster, Inc., on October 7th.

Don't worry, I'm not going to quiz you on who each of The Power of the Heart's co-creators is and what makes him or her great because if you're like me, you probably don't know off-hand what makes every one of these people stand out on the world stage. Instead I'll refer you to the in-a-nutshell one paragraph biographies that de Pape has included at the end of this book.

The way this anthology of inspirational thoughts is organized makes it easy to pick and choose what and how much you'll read each day. What could be more perfect for those of us who lead uber busy lifestyles?

Rather than devoting a single section to one of the 18 people interviewed, this book is organized by topic featuring a selection of these lofty thinkers' contributions in each chapter. The book is divided into three basic parts corresponding to the relationships we all have in life: within ourselves, with friends and family, and with the whole world.

Zeroing in on the actual content, another good thing about this book is that it's not only about passive reading and learning from these great teachers. For example in Chapter 6 "The Power of Gratitude" there is The Three Blessing Exercise (page 64) that actively engages by encouraging you to write down at the end of every day what went well. This trio of things you identify daily -- whether tiny or big, trivial or monumental -- emerge as your three blessings of the day. Then next to each answer, you're asked to tell why each event that day went well.

According to de Pape after a week or more of doing this regularly, "You will feel better, happier and more grateful for all the blessings in your life. You will feel more connected to your heart and your life in the present."
