Ghostbusters Movie Review - Why BOTH Women + Men Will Love This Summer Release

Post 2 in a 3-Part Series

If there's one movie both women AND men should see this summer, it is Ghostbusters. Starring a powerhouse foursome of the funniest people in the business: Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones, who not coincidentally happen to be ladies who are figuratively and literally breaking glass ceilings and high rise building windows. Released on the big screen nationwide today, there is so much here to enjoy. Truly there is something here for the gals and something totally different that will grab the guys attention. Who are you gonna call?

The feature film, expertly directed by Paul Feig and co-written by Feig with Katie Dippold is rated PG-13 and is based on the Ghostbusters movie from 1984. Feig follows in the footsteps of Ivan Reitman who directed the classic hit. In fact, Reitman's influence is ever present in his new role as the producer on this project.

The story revolves around a new epidemic wave of vile monster like ghosts, invading Manhattan after decades of a lull in paranormal activity. This horrific New York City takeover by some of the scariest ghosts on record, miraculously draws an unlikely crew together including paranormal enthusiasts Erin Gilbert (Wigg) and Abby Yates (McCarthy), nuclear engineer Jillian Holtzmann (McKinnon), and subway worker Patty Tolan (Jones) together for a massive all-female ghost busting effort.

As a female, I think age-appropriate girls and women will be empowered by the brainy, complex, highly skilled and strong women characters portrayed by the top billed talent. Hopefully it will get LOTS of girls excited about STEM who will eventually go into the sciences, technology, engineering and mathematics which are still way underrepresented by women.

To many like me, this film inspires us to the depths of our souls because it is a homage to how far we've have come in the pursuit of true equality. We've made great advances socially, in our careers, and in so many other areas of our lives. Now it's all of our jobs to continue to hold our heads high and work toward being ever-increasing positive role models for young modern day girls.

Conversely, for the guys their appreciation will probably spring forth from this fast-paced sci-fi fantasy's non-stop action, chase scenes, and some of the most advanced special effects, stunts and explosions ever brought to the big screen. Along the way, the fellows may also find themselves secretly admiring these super tough and determined broads and may end up looking up to them as super hero equals to the Batmans and Supermans of the entertainment world.

Also, it's not too far-fetched an idea that there's a good chance men will finally see the double-standard of sexism and find tremendous humor and comic relief in the bumbling and klutsy, charming and uber handsome "token male" office assistant, Kevin, played with panache by Chris Hemsworth (Thor, The Avengers).

A word to both the guys and the gals: Gen-Xers, Millennials, and Baby Boomers who loved the original movie,  you will not be disappointed by the many big name cameos from the original Ghostbusters and eccentric personas they've evolved into. You're not going to want to blink, either, lest you miss the many other well known performers and cultural icons popping up when you least expect them. But even if you are too young and weren't around when the first Ghostbusters took the world by storm, there is still so much to indulge in this picture in the way of cool and scary scenes, CGI, cinematography, dialogue and comedy.

And, as director Feig stresses to audiences, "Do not leave the theater for any reason until the credits are over. You are not going to want to miss a single second of this movie."

Here is the Ghostbusters cast, director, producer with our team of Ghostbloggers at the press conference. That's me, MommyBlogExpert, 2nd to the left of Marc Malkin in 2nd row.
