A Better World Facebook Game is a Hit With Both Mom & 13 Year-Old Daughter

Just got back from a major multi-day women's blogging conference called SheCon '11 Conference in Miami last night.

Whenever I have to travel for business, like lots of other moms with careers, I really do miss my family and kids and this trip was no exception.  I've even written a post about good ways for moms to keep in touch with children while on a business trip that was inspired by my last trip to attend Martha Stewart's Dreamers Into Doers Conference in January.

As I was catching up this morning, I had a big surprise when I logged into Facebook to see what my kids had been up to while I was out of town.  The first thing I noticed was that my teen triplet daughter, who occasionally guest posts on this blog as Mini MommyBlogExpert, had joined a new Facebook game called A Better World.

That alone isn't particularly remarkable as my kids play other Facebook games, too.  But, what is amazing is that my girl loves the game she is now playing that she discovered just because she first read about it on her mom's Facebook wall.

Interestingly, the people at Toonups that developed A Better World (ABW) tell me that originally the product's premise was intended to target primarily women (both mothers and not) to play a game that rewards you virtually for doing good turns in the real world.  The logic is that women by nature are givers and many of us have an innate built-in tendency toward altruism -- ABW blends the fun of a game together with doing something meaningful and productive.

There are so many ways for parents teaching children about giving back to community and I have been trying very hard to do that with my own family.

So, imagine my pride when I find out my own daughter wants to join in playing a virtual game like this.  One that is meant for women and moms -- but also is not offensive for kids to play -- and one that is an entertainment diversion with which you can actually help make a difference in the real world we live in.  It makes me feel really good to know that I'm passing on those types of values and devotion to helping others on to my kids.

The game offers more than 15 locations which I've just started venturing into
  • Department of Do Good
  • Gratitude Grotto
  • Sanctuary of Hope
  • And 12 more
Though I signed up a few weeks ago, I'm not that deep into the game yet.  But, my daughter that just joined A Better World a few days ago is already way ahead of me.  So far, we both have found it fun and gratifying.

As a busy mommy blogger I don't have much spare time to play games online. So this one really appeals to me not only because of the do good to others aspect, but also because I can play for short periods of time as a break from my work without fearing that it will distract me too much.

For sure, my daughter and I are already fans of this new game. In fact, both of us keep telling our friends about it and they are getting involved too. We both look forward to progressing in the game and interacting with other players in ABW's growing community.

Which reminds me.  I need to get rid of that gray cloud that's still over my head so I think I'll play this game some more after I finish my work for the day.  Watch for future posts about our adventures as my daughter and I each progress with this game.

How about you? What's your favorite game on Facebook? Have you tried A Better World yet? If you don't play games online, why not?

Five Really Fabulous Bloggers - Enter to WIN $1000 to Celebrate a Friend

Thanks to Trop50 for sponsoring my writing about fabulous bloggers. This year Trop50 is granting 50 Fabulous Wishes. Click here to enter for a chance to win $1,000 to celebrate a friend with a refreshing attitude about looking and feeling fabulous!

I’ve only been mommy blogging for about two years.  Even still, it’s really tough for me to narrow my list down to just five bloggers who have influenced me most.  In all truthfulness in the short time I’ve been blogging – after a career in media relations that spanned over three decades -- I’ve encountered many more amazing bloggers than a mere handful. Nevertheless, I’ll share with you five of my fave blogs, though I can’t number them from one to five since I absolutely adore them all.

This high quality content blog started out simply being my parenting go-to source for learning about how to keep my kids safe in the Internet world.  From the day I started subscribing to this blog’s feed, I’ve acquired much more knowledge on kids and technology than I had ever hoped and it has made a real difference in my own family’s life.  For sure, there is no hi tech topic that involves children that this blog hasn’t addressed at one time or another and I really like that it keeps up on new issues and trends as they emerge.  In fact, I’ve become such an involved reader of this blog that I have been able to develop a personal relationship with the founder and have been one of this blog’s Online Certified Moms for about a year.

Jennifer James, a mommy blogger who founded the mom’s social community, Mom Bloggers Club, has the most energy of anyone I know.  Her blog is a must-read for me as a mom who blogs because her content talks about the frank realities of mom blogging as a business.  Few mom bloggers have the intelligence, foresight, and bravery Jennifer has when it comes to sharing knowledge and teaching the skills that we ned to be successful in this arena.  Jennifer’s discussions on gaining respect from brands and being fairly compensated for your work, though you may be a mom working at home, always draw a lot of comments.  Her blog is engaging, and I love reading it and leaving comments.

This blog is written by a mom who has triplets plus one more close in age just like I do.  The main difference is her kids aren't teens yet, but my are. Whenever I'm feeling the triple overload of dealing with triplets while also mommy blogging this is the one I read for some comic relief.  I don't have half the sense of humor that this mommy has so I always find her way out and wacky comments and observations about life so refreshing.  If you're a mom and you feel like you're going over the deep end with kids, Buried With Kids will provide you with a good laugh.

Melissa Garcia, who works outside the home plus has her own very popular mommy blog that she writes at night -- all while juggling two kids, and an ill husband -- has been a beacon of inspiration from the day I started my blog.  By watching her on Internet TV in the past and continuing to subscribe to her coupon savings alert feeds up to today, I have learned so much about not only blogging but how to save big money when shopping for my family.  The first time she emailed me back personally to respond to a question I had, Consumer Queen had me hooked.

He may be the only man on my list of five, but I try to read Jeff's entire Twitter feed almost every day.  His posts are all about getting the most from social media and he keeps outdoing himself whenever he publishes another blogpost. It's a guess, but I think I probably retweet his tweets more than any other person I follow.

Don't forget to enter the 50 Fabulous Wishes contest for a chance to win $1,000 to celebrate a friend with a refreshing attitude about looking and feeling fabulous. I was selected for this Tropicana Trop50 sponsorship by the Clever Girls Collective, which endorses Blog With Integrity, as I do. I received compensation to use and facilitate my post.

Kung Fu Panda 2 Gift Bag Contents

MBE partnered with DreamWorks Animation for this post

My kids and I (with a group of about 20 other select mom bloggers and a few dads and our kids) were invited to DreamWorks Burbank campus in California last week for a sneak peak at the company's newest animated feature as well as a behind the scenes tour of the studio's lot.

We had much to celebrate with Kung Fu Panda 2 opening in theaters May 26. So watch for a separate post with my review of this movie later this week.

Right now, though, I'd like to share with you the contents of the awesome DreamWorks goodie bag we each received, loaded with all kinds of fun kid-friendly licensed Kung Fu Panda 2 merchandise.

In addition, there were three licensed T-shirts from the film, plus an official Kung Fu Panda 2 coloring book, several packs of 6 collectible cards from the movie with pop-up cards and tattoos for kids, and some specially-marked Kung Fu Panda 2 bottles of Hint water.
