#YoungScientist

Tomorrow's leaders and scientists are among our children and the future literally lies in their hands right now. Without a doubt, in the world we live in today, science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education is essential to the next generation's success.

Literally, there is much we parents can do to inspire a lifelong love of learning and science, to motivate these promising kids and help them realize their true potential by paving the way to fun, hands-on science opportunities. A good example, as you can see from the photos above and below, are the field studies of butterflies and lady bugs I have done with my own kids to fuel their interests in nature and science.

So I couldn't be more excited to tell other moms and dads all about the Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge, a prestigious national science competition for youth in grades 5 through 8 and how you can get your kids involved.

MommyBlogExpert.com
Thanks to sponsorship by 3M, this competition is intended to bring renewed attention to the value of STEM education, beginning in middle school, at a time when traditionally many youngsters begin to lose interest in these important subjects.

Your son or daughter is encouraged to submit his or her ideas now through April 20, 2016, for a chance to win $25,000, to attend an exclusive Discovery Network taping, to work beside a 3M Scientist Mentor and to earn the title "America's Top Young Scientist."

How to Enter

To enter, kids are required to submit a 1-2 minute video to the Young Scientist Challenge about the science behind an original idea or solution that could solve or impact an everyday problem in our world. Entries will be judged on creativity, scientific knowledge, persuasiveness and overall presentation. Videos may be recorded on cell phones or basic digital camera as these will not be judged on elaborate production skills.

In the summer ten finalists will be announced and will be challenged to develop their innovations making a difference. During this period, students will join in a mentorship program working one-on-one with 3M scientists. Each of the ten finalists will also win a trip to the 3M Innovation Center in St. Paul, Minnesota to compete at the final event in October 2016.
