Tzimmes Traditional Jewish Recipe Easy Holiday Sweet Potato and Yam Stew

Celebrations

Tonight starts the Jewish holiday of Passover when families and friends around the world will gather around a beautifully set dinner table to retell the story of the Exodus of the Jews from Egypt through a prescribed ceremony. This tradition is called the seder, which literally means "order" and is followed by a festive meal including customary foods such as the colorful and nutritious easy-to-make fruited Tzimmes Sweet Potato and Yam Stew featured in this post.

Recipe

Tzimmes Sweet Potato & Yam Stew

This is my modern take on a sweet vegetable vegetarian dish that has been a favorite for generations. It involves using fresh sweet potatoes, yams, dried fruit and some spices and is easy to make and beautiful to serve. The trick is to follow the easy directions and NOT stir this at all while it cooks.

Time to Make: 1 hour
Makes 6 Servings

Ingredients
  • 3 T. margarine
  • 1 large sweet potato, peeled & sliced
  • 1 large yam, peeled & sliced
  • 1 bag of Manischewitz Dried Plums, Peaches, Pears & Apricots
  • 2 T. brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup orange juice
  • 1/2 t. cinnamon
Directions

1.  Melt margarine in deep frying pan or dutch oven pot
2. When melted, add sliced sweet potatoes & yams
3. Add dried fruit
4. Sprinkle brown sugar, orange juice & cinnamon over all
5. Cover pan and cook on low 1 hour. Be to NOT stir during cooking so vegetables don't fall apart. When potatoes are tender, but not mushy, and pierce with a fork they are done.
6. Carefully transfer and artfully display this delicious cooked vegetable/fruit stew on a platter and serve either warm or at room temperature.

Summer Kids Pool Water Swim Safety Tips

Parenting

Holiday and Vacation Family Travel Safety

According to a new survey by Time Inc. and YouGov, 42% answered they planned to travel this holiday season and 27 percent said they planned to stay in a hotel. For families traveling over the holidays, delayed flights, bad weather and heavy traffic are not the only concerns that need to be front of mind.

For most children, the last time they were swimming was several months ago and skills can get rusty.Trips to relatives' homes in warm climates and hotels with pools can create a situation where children could be at a higher risk for getting into a situation where drowning is possible.

9 Pool and Water Safety Tips

United States Swim School Association offers these valuable water safety tipsCreate a verbal cue that must be given by an adult before any kids can enter the pool.
  • Create a verbal cue that must be given by an adult before any kids can enter the pool.
  • Gather the adults of your extended family if cousins and relatives are swimming together and create an agreed upon set of pool rules before kids are allowed in the water.
  • Select a parent to be the designated "water watcher." This adult should not be drinking alcohol while children are in or near water.
  • Familiarize your children with the pool they will be swimming in, i.e. where the shallow and deep ends are, where stairs to get in and out are located, where they can and cannot swim.
  • If visiting a hotel with an indoor water park, do not rely on lifeguards to constantly monitor your children. You cannot be sure how experienced a lifeguard is and should never assume. It might take a new guard time to notice an unsafe situation in a crowded pool and you need to be ready to react first if your child needs help.

MommyBlogExpert.com

  • Do not use water wings or pool floats as a substitution for supervision if your child is not a strong swimmer.
  • Always go with children to the hotel pool. Do not let them swim unsupervised. Just because you are on vacation does not mean you are on vacation from being a responsible parent.
  • If you have a pool at home be sure to take precautions before traveling. Secure fences, gates, door locks and covers so an accident does not occur while you are away.
  • Cold weather destinations are never a guarantee of safety, either. Children still need to be watched around water that appears frozen should not be allowed to walk on frozen ponds, lakes, creeks or other bodies of water because it could easily crack and trap a child under the ice.

This spring and summer when your kids are off from school or when your family is away together visiting relatives or traveling on vacation, celebrate safely on and near the water by following all this helpful advice.
