Parents, families, kids and animal lovers in the New York area have another reason to rejoice: the three new lemurs born in late March recently made their debut at The Madagascar! exhibit at WCS’s (Wildlife Conservation Society) Bronx Zoo and can easily be viewed by the public. These include a pair of baby two ring tailed lemurs (Lemur catta) and one brown collared lemur (Eulemur collaris), both types of which are considered endangered in the wild. Visitors can now observe both species cozying up to their mothers inside their naturalistic habitat replicating the Malagasy Spiny Forest of Madagascar. Newborns ride on Mommy's chest and back for the first few weeks. Then, within 2-4 weeks, they start moving around on their own while staying close to their Moms.
For some time now The Bronx Zoo has successfully been breeding lemurs as part of Species Survival Plans, cooperative breeding programs designed to enhance the genetic viability of animal populations in zoos accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA).
Lemurs are only found in one place in the world –the African island nation of Madagascar. WCS is working hard to save these beautiful creature's disappearing habitats, which unfortunately are being destroyed by human activity including charcoal production and slash-and-burn agriculture. About Madagascar!
The Bronx Zoo's Madagascar! exhibit, opened in 2008, educates zoo visitors about the biodiversity of this magical island off the coast of Africa as well as demonstrates how WCS and its partners are working to save its wildlife and wild places. In addition to ring-tailed lemurs and brown collared lemurs, species living here include red ruffed lemurs (Varecia rubra), gray mouse lemurs (Microcebus murinus), crowned lemurs (Eulemur coronatus, and Coquerel's sifaka (Propithecus coquereli). Black and white ruffed lemurs (Varecia variegate) can be seen in Manhattan at WCS's Central Park Zoo. About Wildlife Conservation Society's Bronx Zoo The Bronx Zoo is open daily 10 am - 5 pm weekdays; 10 am - 5:30 pm weekends from April - October; 10 am - 4:30 pm weekends November - March. Adult admission is $19.95, children (3-12 years old) $12.95, children under 3 free, seniors (65+) are $17.95. Parking is $15 for cars, $18 for buses.
