Love, Simon Movie Review A Film That's About More Than Just Teenage Angst

Movies

MBE partnered with 20th Century Fox for this Post

There's nothing new about motion pictures addressing topics like teenage angst, sexuality and gender identification, as well as featuring a token gay character or two within the backdrop of a largely heterosexual story line. However, until now there have been few, if any, films which have tackled all three topics in a single project.

Love Simon Movie

The new movie Love, Simon -- just released nationwide in theaters today --  not only is a media pioneer in sensitively embracing that trio of concepts. It's also a movie about anti-bullying, friendship, family relationships, unconditional love, acceptance and tolerance.

At the Screening Q&A: Josh Duhamel, Jennifer Garner, Nick Robinson

As the film opens, Simon Spier (Nick Robinson) is surrounded by a loving family which includes his dad (Josh Duhamel), mom (Jennifer Garner) and sister (Talitha Eliana Bateman). He also is part of a group of really good friends who adore each other and do everything together from driving car pool to school to performing in their high school theater's production.

To the outside world, Simon appears to be just another kid with typical seventeen-year old high school student issues who also loves junk food, works hard in school, goes to parties and hangs out with a solid group of guys and girls.

But things aren't as simple as they seem. There's a big secret Simon has yet to reveal to his family or even his closest friends: he has come to the realization that he's definitely gay. To complicate things further, he has fallen for an anonymous classmate and they've begun an online relationship without either knowing the true identity of the other person.

The love story that unfolds is funny, suspenseful and heart-breaking all at the same time and keeps the audience guessing until the end of the film. Ultimately, though, what happens is life-changing and eye-opening not only for Simon, but also for his family and friends who love him,  all of whom eventually come to acknowledge and accept who this young man really is with unconditional love.

Directed by Greg Berlanti (Dawson's Creek, Brother & Sisters), this is a film which deals with some of the most challenging teenage issues with deep sensitivity and heart.

Here's what Jennifer Garner has to say during the post-screening Q&A about her role in Love, Simon from the perspective of a mom in real life...

Ultimately, Love, Simon is a movie worth seeing, both for age-appropriate kids and grownups. It's a coming-of-age drama, romance and comedy that's all about discovering your true self and falling in love. Rated PG-13 from 20th Century Fox.

About Love, Simon

Love, Simon, which is based on Becky Albertalli's acclaimed novel, is now playing in theaters nationwide. For more information visit the official movie site as well as stay in the loop by following the film on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and Twitter.

DIY LED Light Wall Hanging Project Easy Way to Add Cozy Ambiance to Any Room

Home Decor

Guest Post by Callum Mundine
Co-founder & Chief Lighting Designer
LED World Australia

DIY Canvas Light Wall Hanging

Looking for ways to spruce up your home without breaking the bank? In only three steps, you’ll have yourself a Pinterest-worthy piece of décor that won’t hurt your wallet. Canvas lights are a great way to create a cozy ambiance for your kid's bedroom as well as for just about any other room in your home. The best part is this project is easy to make using just a few basic materials you may already have or can easily find at local craft and hardware stores.

Start creating your very own DIY canvas light, following these simple steps:

Step 1

First, gather or purchase all the materials you need at your favorite craft and hardware stores. You may even already have some or all of the things you need lying around at home, so be sure to check there first before going shopping!

Items you’ll need

  • Canvas of your choice
  • Fast-drying acrylic paint (or regular poster paint)
  • Paint brush
  • Masking tape
  • LED string lights
  • Craft knife
Canvas comes in all shapes and sizes, so pick the one you like best. Many varieties of LED string lights are available including energy-efficient, battery-operated, and colored selections. Minimal or bold, the choice is yours!

Step 2

Before you start painting your project, place old newspapers to cover the work area and avoid stains on your table or floor. Carefully lay your canvas on your work surface. Next, decide what type of background you want to set the lights in. It may be an eclectic mix of bold colors or simple scenery, or you can add your favorite quote, the lyrics of a song, or a line from a book you love. Be as abstract or as elaborate as you want. Start painting your masterpiece by using fast-drying acrylic paint or your regular poster paint. You can also make interesting patterns and add texture using glitters or colored sand. Once you’re done, let your artwork dry for a few hours.

Step 3

After the paint has set, it is time to start installing the LED lights. Turn your canvas over and use a pencil to carefully mark the areas where you intend to place your lights. Make sure to space the holes as far apart as the lights are on their actual string. When you are satisfied with the layout, pierce a small hole through your marked spots with a sharp craft knife. Carefully push each bulb through the holes and secure it with masking tape. Repeat the process until all the lights are in place.

Your masterpiece is now ready! Hang it up on the wall, hit the switch, and enjoy your very own hand-crafted DIY canvas light. For sure, this is a great way to add character to your space without spending too much. You can even gather your family, children and friends and make this into a fun group project. Try it out and let us know what you think!
