Kate Spade Handbag Designer Sudden Death Reminds Us About Suicide Prevention

Deeply saddened to hear of the sudden death today of beautiful and talented Kate Spade at her home in New York City. Not only was Kate a wife and mother of a school age daughter, she was one of America's most-admired fashion icons, as well as one of my personal favorite handbag designers. 

Kate's suspected suicide, at the young age of just 55, reminds us all that depression can strike anywhere and that too many lives are being lost needlessly. Mental illness never discriminates between men, women and children and it isn't based on success, economic status or anything else.

Major depression affects us all and chances are you personally know someone who is depressed, sad and/or withdrawn. Depression is much more common than we might think. In fact, according to the Archives of General Psychiatry, 14.8 million American adults (almost 7% of the total U.S. population over the age of 18) are suffering with this mental disorder epidemic. You may even be aware of someone who has talked about or has considered suicide

Free YMCA Teen Summer Memberships for Kids 12-17 at all 26 Metro LA Locations

Summer As You Are

Here's something that's free, healthy, and awesome for teenagers to do this summer. YMCA of Metro Los Angeles is offering free membership this June and July to teens ages 12  to 17 at all 26 locations in the area.

This completely free program includes access to swimming pools, gyms, fitness centers and group exercise classes as well as programs and activities designed especially for teens. It goes beyond fitness, too. Also offered as part of this freebie are college and employment readiness activities as well as Teen Nights giving young adults the opportunity to socialize.

"This is the third consecutive year we are welcoming thousands of teens into our Ys at no cost to their families," says Alan Hostrup, president and CEO of YMCA of Metropolitan Los Angeles. 

"Our summer teen initiative is intended to make a tangible impact at this important time in their lives," explains Hostrup, "nurturing their potential, creating a sense of community and forming healthy habits that potentially will lead to prosperous and bright futures."

FREE Registration
