2-Day Count Down to the 2010 American Family Summer Roadtrip - U.S. Travel With Kids

by Janis Brett Elspas
MommyBlogExpert.blogspot.com

It's our annual summer road trip vacation count down.  Less than TWO days from today our family's U.S. car trip, departing from Southern California for points east of the Golden State with my 4 teens aboard (triplets, age 13, plus big brother, 14) is scheduled to begin.

The fact that as mom I'll be on my own with the FOUR TEENS above for the first 2 weeks, before I pick up Hubbie at a midwest airport for the return two week trip home, may scare some less intrepid parents.  But don't worry, we've done this all before many times as you will learn in this post.  So, I hope this trip is as thrilling for you to read about as much as it is for my family to experience and for me to journal about.

We've been doing these extended family car vacations every summer since all four kids were in diapers at once.  This rather unconventional mode of holiday travel is an effort to pass on the tradition to my own kids that my father started with the multi-week summer auto trips he took me and my siblings on when we were kids in the 1960s.   As you might think from our family's well-used map of the U.S.A. pictured below, in the past five years alone my hubbie, kids and I have averaged between 4000 - 5000 miles per summer driving the Interstates and back roads of America.  With a different route each year, we've accumulated some pretty awesome memories and good stories which are destined to last a lifetime for each of us.

What's different about this trip is that it will be the first time that this mom (also known as MommyBlogExpert) will be blogging about it along the way.   You'll have a lot to look forward to as I'll be posting regularly about insider sightseeing tips discovered and the experiences we have, as well as tell you about our lodging and eating while on the road exploring over the next month.  As we travel, we'll also be testing and reviewing a variety of products and services that we will be carrying with us that are enhancing our old-fashioned 2010 American Family Summer Roadtrip in some way -- by making it easier or more affordable, fun, educational, and/or more meaningful.  Our summer trip stories will continue on MommyBlogExpert.blogspot.com into the fall after we return, too, because I expect that there just won't be enough time to share even half of everything I'll be able to tell you about.

Since we have such an awesome time on these travels and expect lots of other families might too, I started to think.  It seems like I'm not the only one who recalls them with such fondness -- there are so many other baby boomers that remember fun car trips with their own families in the 50s and 60s.  So, the question begs: Why is it that road trips have fallen out of favor anyway?  This is partly due to a change in mores and culture here in the states beginning in the 1970s as well as to the increasing convenience of airplane travel.  That's not even to mention the high price of gas or the plummeting number of quality time hours that parents and kids spend together today as compared to several decades past. Pics of our kids hiking in Montana (above) and Huckleberry picking in northern Idaho (below) last summer.

By blogging about this road trip I hope to do my part to reignite America's family road trip tradition.    Ultimately, the goal is to show how a car trip in the Internet age rises above simply being a summer vacation, soaring to new heights that tighten the bonds between children (from babies through teens) and their parents while creating lifetime experiences that cannot be imprinted in our hearts, souls, and minds in any other way.

Join us for the ride via this blog, as we pack and set off for this exciting family adventure.  You can also keep track of us by following on Twitter where I'll be tweeting travel-related tips as we discover them using the Twitter hash tag #USfamilyroadtrip , as well as tweeting photos that my kids and I take during the trip.    I look forward to all your comments about our travel experiences!

Fashion & Glue Dots Make a Perfect Teen Bonding Ensemble - PRODUCT REVIEW

by Janis Brett Elspas
MommyBlogExpert.blogspot.com

My kids and I love being creative, especially when it involves crafting something beautiful from objects so mundane as colored paper and assorted odds and ends we have around the house.

Since my children are all teens now it is especially important for me to maintain close relationships with each of them.  For sure, this project bonded in more ways than one and in this blogpost, I'll recap that family togetherness experience.
When we had the opportunity to receive some Glue Dots samples in conjunction with a  TwitterMoms contest, my middle triplet daughter and I both were excited to try a product that we previously hadn't heard about, but one that sounded like it would make our arts and crafts a whole lot easier to assemble.  The Glue Dots (2 rolls with dispensers & 1 package with sheets) that we received have sticky adhesive on both sides and the diameter sizes we used for the projects pictured ranged in size from about 3/16" to 3/8" (.5 cm to 1 cm).

Working with these wonder dots made this a really fun and enjoyable activity to do with my artistic triplet daughter.  As you can see from the pictures of her and her fashion project, she's a teen and definitely loves shopping, clothes, shoes & fashion accessories.  Luckily for me, she still treasures the time we spend doing arts and crafts together, too.  You know how the saying goes... "A family that crafts together stays together."  Actually, I just made that up right now but you get the idea, spending such quality one-on-one time together in a truly stress free way can only strengthen the bonds kids have with their parents.

We used the various Glue Dots samples received to make an eclectic assortment of note cards -- including all those you see pictured in this post.  This product was truly mess-free and easy to use.  The picture at left shows the way the Glue Dots dispensers work, you simply roll them onto your project then attach an item of your choice.  These dots held beautifully whatever we stuck them on: paper, ribbon, pearl strands, Hebrew alphabet beads, rhinestones, faux acrylic jewels, sequins, metal charms, paper, and other miscellaneous accents.  We even used some recycled materials by cutting out pictures of the latest fashions from our Vogue, Teen Vogue, W Magazine, and Elle magazines and then added sparkling gems to accent a few cards like the one you see above.  Those jeweled stilettos are to die for, aren't they?

Our neighbors have been admiring these cards that my 13 year-old made this past week.  She's even received several orders for custom made greeting cards and thank you notes from  some of our friends and is working on a bunch of different designs right now.

All the note cards you see in this post we made incorporating Glue Dots, mostly crafted by my talented fashionista teen who does beautiful hand calligraphy, too.  While I sat watching, it gave me such joy to see her creating some really lovely designs.  As a family we are also into scrapbooking, so we can't wait to use Glue Dots again for that craft after we return from our summer road trip next month to illustrate our vacation memories for the album each kid is making.

For this test and product review we received the Glue Dots sampled (pictured at left) which include Craft Dot n Go Glue Dots, Removable Dot n Go Glue Dots, and Glue Dots Mini.  All are available where arts and crafts supplies are sold online and at stores such as Michael's and Jo-Ann Fabrics & Crafts.  See the Glue Dots Store Locator for more information on exactly where you can purchase these.

If you still need inspiration, you can get more really great ideas by visiting the Glue Dots Fan Page on Facebook.

Meanwhile, I hope you'll comment below this post telling what activities you do to bond with your own teenager.   I can't wait to hear what other parents are doing to create meaningful time with your kids.

FTC Disclosure:  MommyBlogExpert received the Glue Dots products described and pictured above.  This post is part of a blogging contest from the TwitterMoms community.  There is a chance this post could be randomly selected to win a $30 Amazon GiftCard.  More details about the contest here.   MommyBlogExpert did not receive any payment or other compensation associated with this post.  See complete FTC Disclosure information that appears at the bottom of MommyBlogExpert's main page and at the bottom of every individual post on this blog, including this one.

How Are You Better Than Ever? Dove's Facebook Contest Wants to Help You Celebrate

by Janis Brett Elspas
MommyBlogExpert.blogspot.com

How are you better than ever?  That's a great question, especially for us moms to ask ourselves at least now and then.  We are more than cooks, drivers, personal assistants, child raisers, among other things.

How am I personally better than ever?  That was the question posed to us for this project on TwitterMoms.com where you too can participate.  I'd say, as a mom of four kids born in a year that are all teens now, I think I have finally achieved that goal. Because I am mom who values my family -- hubbie and kids -- more now than ever before.  In fact, enhancing family living, is the foundation of MommyBlogExpert.

How about you? In addition to entering Dove's Gofresh contest on Facebook feel free to leave a comment below this post to share how you are better than ever, too.

FTC Disclosure:  I wrote this blog post while participating in TwitterMoms and Dove® gofresh™ blogging program, making me eligible to get a $25 gift card and some product.
