Cube Dog Review - A New FREE Downloadable Virtual Pet App for iPhone & iPod Touch

Thank you to Cube Dog for sponsoring this review. For more information about Cube Dog please visit the Facebook page or download it on iTunes.

Family iPhone & iPod Apps

Like other Baby Boomers who can ever forget the Pet Rock craze of the 70s?  Now there's a new trending pet toy of the hi tech variety for 2011 that I think -- if my own kids' experience with this is any indication -- might also be a big hit with the younger generation.

It's called Cube Dog, a fun, free new family-friendly game that was just released.  With this app, both kids and kid-like adults can easily and quickly design their own unique 3D virtual dog pet.  After you've created your very own little animal, you can take it anywhere to play with you on your mobile device (even to places where regular dogs aren't allowed).

The app includes really cool features like being able to take a snapshot of your virtual pet with the camera on your iPhone and then sharing it with your friends and family via email.  Plus, Cube Dogs can do everything from sit, walk, play chase, and fetch a bone to playing a ball game.

Cube Dog runs on
  • iPhone 3GS
  • iPhone 4
  • iPod Touch 3rd generation
  • iPod Touch 4th generation
** requires iOS 4.0 or higher

The Cube Dog app is a snap to play with.  After we downloaded this no-cost app to my iPhone 3GS, my 14 year-old triplet son was able to create his own new virtual pup in just 10 minutes.

"It's so cute and fun because you can get your doggy to sit like a real pet, " he says.  "Once you set it up with the free body parts they give you,  there are three different extra packs of things you can then buy for 99 cents each as add-ons.  These include additional animations like dog movements and tricks, facial expressions, and fun accessories like dog clothes and toys."

Though the Cube Dog app itself doesn't really live and breath, it is a fun and entertaining way for those who can't have an actual pet in real life.  The fact that kids don't have to feed, water, or walk this little guy to keep him happy and healthy is definitely a plus.  Moms and dads will be especially thrilled about this maintenance-free pet puppy, since for once we won't get stuck with scooping the poop like we seem to end up doing in the real world.

The True Meaning of Memorial Day in America

    American Observance

Regular readers of this blog know I am a passionate supporter of our troops, both those who are fighting today and the many who've lost their lives in past wars and conflicts.

Memorial Day always seems to awaken me to a sad reality of the changing times.  Nowadays, when you ask just about any one under the age of 40 what their thoughts are about the significance of this day, you'll likely hear some variation of one of these responses:
    • It's a long holiday weekend off from work and school
    • It's a non-stop 3-day celebration of some of the best store sales
    • It's the official beginning of BBQ season
I consider myself one of the fortunate ones who would give a completely different sort of answer to this poignant question.  As a child growing up in the 60s I remember not only learning about the history of Memorial Day at school and what it was all about.  I also recall my father raising the American flag in front of our house each year as well as attending memorial services to remember those who had served and sacrificed their lives in past wars.  Finally, I recollect going to watch a patriotic parade that included men from our local VFW chapter marching by.

Back then when I was in grade school this day of memorial was always marked largely as a somber but uplifting occasion on May 30th.  It wasn't until 1971 when -- as dictated by a new U.S. law -- this Federal Holiday was permanently changed to the last Monday in May to create a three-day weekend.  To this day, Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW) still want to revert back to the original date.  I tend to agree with these groups in that creating three-day weekends out of convenience is likely the reason why the younger generation no longer really understands the meaning of Memorial Day.

    History of the Day
Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day.  It was first observed by Freedmen (freed enslaved Blacks from the South) in Charleston, South Carolina in 1865 in memory of fallen Union Civil War soldiers.  The first reference to "Memorial Day" was in 1882 and this gradually came to be the preferred name of the day.  However, the observance did not become widely known until the end of World War II and the U.S. government didn't officially change the name to Memorial Day until 1967.

How You Can Help Bring Back the Day's True Meaning
The best way, in my opinion, to recapture the day's original semblance is to teach our children how important it is to honor the brave men and women who have served our country in the past, as well as those men and women who are actively serving.  Also, we can't forget American military families as well as living veterans -- instead we need to support them and look to them for inspiration.

A few other ideas to take a more active role:
    • You and your kids can send messages thanking military service people and their families here
    • If your family is interested, you'll find lots of additional ways to get involved at JoiningForces.gov
Feel free to share additional ways you know about that help remind us all about what Memorial Day in America is really all about.
