Ever Expanding Exotic Variety of Fine Coffees You Can Buy In-Store and Online

Good Food

One of my earliest and fondest memories as a child is of coffee. Yes, coffee: not hot chocolate, hot spiced apple cider, or any other kid-friendly warm drink.

Back in the 60s when I was a preschooler I remember going to the local A&P -- a huge eastern seaboard full-size grocery chain -- with my dad to shop since my mother didn’t drive then.

These trips were really special, especially when we needed coffee which my parents both drank every morning.  At the store, I’d go with my Daddy to the coffee aisle and there he would let me choose a bag of coffee beans.  Together we’d dump this into the self-serve electric coffee grinder that was attached to the shelf.  This was the high tech gadget of the times and magically, in what seemed like seconds, the machine would return fresh ground coffee into the bag right there in the store.  I can practically still smell that aroma now.

As a kid, for sure, I loved just the scent of that fresh ground coffee.  I didn’t started drinking it myself, though, until I was a college student and have been sipping java ever since.  As late as the 1970s, I don't recall there being any such thing as flavored coffee beans, whole or ground – I don’t even think you could buy fresh ground decaf, only instant Sanka was available.

For well over a decade now it seems that the variety of flavored coffees to take home that you can buy at your local market or coffee shop hasn't stopped expanding.  This is even more so true now, because you can even purchase a variety of flavors of coffee online from many of the same companies.

My latest coffee discovery is a northeastern regional brand I’d never heard of before I came across it at a Miami new media conference because I now live on the West Coast.  It’s called New England Coffee and I had the chance to savor several of the company’s scrumptious blends at SheCon 11 one of the industry's important mommy and women's blogging conferences recently.  Flavors I tried there included the  New England Breakfast Blend, $6.49/12 ounce bag and Hazelnut Crème, $6.49/11 ounce bag.  As a coffee aficionado I enjoyed the rich and fresh taste of both of these.

At the time, though, I have to admit that I was slightly disappointed, thinking that I would not be able to buy this brand when I returned to California.  That is, until I chatted up the New England Coffee booth hostesses to learn more about this company.  What I found out was that their gourmet coffees are available in specialty stores and grocery markets in a number of different states, primarily in the east and as far west as Texas.  You can also buy many of the quality products including flavored coffees, tea, novelties and gift items online.  And, in fact, some types are available exclusively on the Internet.

I hope to have the opportunity to try some of New England Coffee’s flavorful varieties that are now available via their website, such as Pistachio Ice Cream Coffee,  Blueberry Cobbler Coffee, $6.49/11 ounce bag and Chocolate Cappuccino Coffee, $6.49/11 ounce bag.  Watch for another report from this coffee lover soon -- once I’ve tasted some of these other yummy-sounding flavors which are supposed to be really delicious as iced drinks which sound like just the right thing for the hot summer months.

About New England Coffee
A third generation family business based in the Boston area, New England Coffee has been around for more than 90 years.  Today, they are the largest coffee roaster in the northeast and all their products are certified kosher.

What's the most exotic coffee of any brand that you've ever tried and loved?  Have you ever had New England Coffee and, if so, what's your favorite flavor?

Google PageRank - What it Means to Mommy Bloggers & The Brands We Work With

Mommy Bloggers

To have a Google Page Rank or to not have a Google PR, that is the question.  More importantly, what do these page rankings mean to moms with blogs and the brands we interact with?

I suspect that there are quite of few other moms and women like me who blog who are slightly baffled by all this to say the least.  That's despite the fact that we've worked hard to build our blogs and understand the nuts and bolts about how everything works to become successful.

As mommy bloggers, we work tirelessly to do all the things we think we are supposed to do to establish and maintain our individual online presences.  This includes -- but is not limited to
  • Developing unique and well-written content for our targeted audiences
  • Educating ourselves as much as possible about Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
  • Building quality in-going and out-going links that generate traffic
  • Networking and growing our professional skills both virtually and live at a variety of must-attend conferences for blogging women and moms like SheCon 11 and BlogHer and larger events that are not primarily female, but important to participate in, such as BlogWorld.
Actually, I've been pondering this question and trying to do all the right things, ever since I started Mommy Blog Expert about a 2-1/2 years ago -- and have yet to figure it all out.  My own page ranking according to Google has gone up and down like a roller coaster, from a high of 3 to a low of 0 and currently at a 3 again.  At times, especially lately there seems to be little correlation collectively between my blog's unique monthly visitors and page views and these mysterious numbers that Google owns.

To begin with:  What is Google Page Rank anyway?  According to Wikipedia, "PageRank" is a trademark of Google and the PageRank process holds a U.S. Patent through Stanford University.  An interesting tidbit is that the "Page" reference in the proper name of the Google system used to rank every blog and website on the Internet does not reference to a noun, instead it is named after one of Google's founders, Larry Page.

Simply explained, the Google PR numbering system qualifies and quantifies the hypertext links leading into your blog and in fact, are more interested in quality over quantity.  This means that PageRank is determined primarily not by the amount of the traffic on your blog, but by quality of the links that point to your blog from elsewhere in cyberspace.

Techzons just published a useful piece on June 30, 2011 that makes some progress into demystifying the PageRank system.  It includes easy to understand ways on how to increase your PageRank as well as advice on things that decrease PageRank and how Google PageRank is calculated.

Just for the fun of it, I wanted to see how my Google PageRank of 3 rates against various sites and blogs I admire.   To find out your own or any other site's or blog's ranking, all you have to do is visit and use the free PR Checker or just plug in the URL you're checking below.

Check Page Rank of your Web site pages instantly:

Mommy Blog Expert's Little Experiment
As of date of publication of this post, here are the results (on a scale of 0-10 points) of the PRs for various home pages I checked.

Bloggy Moms, 5/10
BlogHer, 6/10
Martha Stewart, 7/10
Mom Bloggers Club, 6/10
Procter and Gamble, 7/10
She Blogs, 4/10
Social Moms, 5/10

Interestingly, two sites have the highest scores of any I researched:
PR Checker, 9/10
Google, 9/10

Gee, I wonder if getting a 10 Google PR is virtually impossible?

There are also other resources out there that you can use to measure your blog's reputation including Alexa and Compete.  Both of these are highly respected by the industry as Google PR is, but Compete seems to be enjoying quite a bit of growth in popularity right now, especially with brands trying to measure bloggers like us moms.

Though my own score pales in comparison to the big league players, I'll just let it be.  I just don't see any reason why I should obsess over my rankings on any of these measuring services right now.  Besides, I've got to use what little energy I have left after mommy-ing four teens (triplets, 14 and big brother 15) to write and publish quality content on this mommy blog.

How about you? Why do you care (or not care) about PageRank according to Google? What do you think of the PageRank, Alexa, and/or Compete evaluation systems in general?  I look forward to learning what other mom bloggers and also the brands targeting mommies feel about these and other lesser known ranking systems currently in use.

Flightless Goose Kids Book Review

Children's Books

A Story About Rising Above Challenges - Review & GIVEAWAY

MBE received the featured book to facilitate review

I'm thrilled to let you know that Mommy Blog Expert is today's stop on the Flightless Goose Virtual Book Tour! I invite you to read my review below and enter the giveaway I'm hosting to win a copy of your very own.

As a mommy blogger I am approached by dozens of publishers and authors every week about reviewing their books.  Unfortunately, due to time limits, I have to be selective because I just don't have the time I wish I had as a mommy blogger with triplets plus one more to share all the great kid's books that are out there.

One book I think families with young children ought to know about is Flightless Goose by Eric D. Goodman.  The tale is actually based on the real-life story about a goose that lived in Columbus, Ohio.  When the author and his wife, Nataliya (who illustrated for this project) witnessed the downed bird's troubles, they decided to create a kid's book around that scenario.

As the story goes, Gilbert the Goose has a terrible accident and can no longer fly, so he can't migrate with his feathered friends when they fly south every winter.  What transpires when Gilbert is left behind and he is faced with a variety of challenges such as how a goose can survive a Midwestern Winter in the snow makes for an inspirational story that parents and children will both enjoy.

What I like best about Flightless Goose
  • It's hard cover which means it can withstand many, many readings of the story.
  • The juvenile title is a real family affair with its husband-wife writer-illustrator daddy-mommy team work.
  • The watercolor & pen illustrations are unique, colorful, and plentiful, making this a good one to keep very young kids engaged as you read to them.
  • Text is simple enough that older children who have a bit of intellectual ability can take their turn reading to mom, dad, or even the entire family.
  • The story is based on a real incident involving animals, a subject that is most kid-friendly.
  • It illustrates sensitivity toward disabilities and character who are different from their peers. At the same time the tale is very upbeat, about rising above and beyond challenges.  Both things children are never too young to learn about in a story format such as this.

Supreme Court Overturns Law Against Violent Video Game Sales to Kids - What it Means to Families

Parenting

Editor's Note:  When I first heard about this shortly before the 4th of July weekend, I thought it was another reason to celebrate America advocating for our children.  After all, isn't that what makes the USA so great, that our youths' lives are treasured like the most precious of jewels?  Then I read the newspaper more carefully and realized that actually the exact opposite was true.

Indeed, we've got some real bad news for moms and dads here.  Especially if you're like me and you're worried about your kids playing with (or merely being possibly exposed to) violent and inappropriate video games.

As a mommy blogger I've had first-hand experience on the hi tech and gaming front.  I've reviewed and worked with family-friendly video games including the Facebook-based game A Better World by ToonUps and others.  I am a Nancy Drew AmbassadHer for HerInteractive too.  Most importantly, as a journalist, I'm always looking for entertainment and technologies that promote good values.  Further, I'm a Certified Online Mom, and as you may already know, I'm passionate about being an involved parent when it comes to safe technology use on the Internet and offline for kids

So what's got my feathers all riled up?  In case you haven't already heard the U.S. Supreme Court -- before going into summer recess at the end of June -- has declared unconstitutional a California law banning sales of violent video games to children.  Note, as you read on and think about its impact on children:  the government routinely uses the word "recess" to describe the summer vacation of America's elected and appointed officials, including the judges of the highest court.

Shockingly as I view it, the 7-2 ruling in this case has been viewed as a win-win for video game makers and sellers.  The video gaming industry's argument: the existing voluntary ESRB ratings system, which is in already place nationwide, is "an adequate screen for parents to judge the appropriateness of computer game content."

I took my kids to visit Washington, DC as elementary school students
Vintage Photo by Janis Brett Elspas, MommyBlogExpert.com

Having taught my kids that the U.S. government loves and protects its children when I took them on a roadtrip to Washington, DC when they were younger, I just don't get this.  So I did a little research about the issues as well as find out more about who our U.S. Supreme Court Judges are to try and make more sense of all this.

Referencing a rejected California law restricting the sale or rental of violent video games to minors the Supreme Court decided in June that video games -- even violent ones  -- qualify under the U.S. Constitution for First Amendment protection.

That's a scary thought because the court's position applies even when kids are involved.

I then dug further and discovered that
  • The current Supreme Court of the United States' nine members -- 3 women, 6 men -- have between 0 and 9 children each, totaling 13 kids in all.
  • The two most-recently added Associates, Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan, aren't married and neither woman has offspring and that Associate Justice Scalia has the most of any judge with 9 children.
  • All the other Associates as well as Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. have 2 or 3 kids each.
  • That's not including grandchildren or great grand kids some of the more senior Justices likely have -- which I wasn't able to count.
With so many children who are descendants of these Supreme Court justices that are also impacted by the deciion, it really surprises me that the outcome is so pro Big Business and not at all child-friendly.

I'm also concerned about your children and mine -- collectively representing our nation's future.  I am proud to be an American and support the U.S. Constitution as one of its patriotic citizens. I'm also a firm believer, to a certain extent, in things like Freedom of Speech and the Press.  But I am also a mom of four kids -- triplets plus one more all born within a year -- and I think the First Amendment was taken too far in this particular decision.

In the end, I don't want my kids playing violent video games on their friends' hand-held devices during recess.  Now it's your turn to weigh in on this issue.   How about you? As a mom or dad of kids that potentially will be affected by this Supreme Court ruling both short- and long-term, what do you think?
