References to 9/11 Everywhere Among Retailers at Fashion's Night Out 2011

September 11 - Hope & Renewal
#8 in an 11-Day Memorial Series of Posts

This is the eighth post reflecting on 9/11 in MBE's special 11 Days of September memorial series pointing out the various ways hope and renewal has emerged from this great tragedy.
Though this Thursday evening, September 8th, was festive, acknowledgments of the forthcoming 10th anniversary of September 11th by the fashion industry were present at Fashion Night Out 2011.  At Neiman Marcus Beverly Hills the catwalk fashion show culminated with a grouping of female and male models wearing different outfits in red, white, and blue.

Also, at Brooks Brothers in Beverly Hills, a classic commemorative tie is being sold with 100% of net sales going to the 9/11 Memorial.  These are just two of the many examples of how retail businesses are remembering this great tragedy in their own way, while at the same time looking forward, upbeat and positive with renewed hope for the future.

My 14 year old daughter and I attended Fashion Night Out in Beverly Hills, California, but Fashion's Night Out 2011 was a huge worldwide shopping event with activities elsewhere around Southern California.  In fact, a total of 250 cities around the U.S. also participated -- with 1,178 retailers in New York City alone. That's not even to mention the other 18 countries such as Greece, UK, Japan, China, Brazil, France, South Korea, and others  -- also involved in this year's event which is intended to stimulate consumer spending worldwide.

Teaching children about 9/11 - Free School Lesson Curriculum Resources for K-12

September 11 - Hope & Renewal

#7 in an 11-Day Memorial Series of Posts

This is the seventh post in MBE's special 11 Days of September memorial series.

New York City Department of Education Schools and the National September 11 Memorial & Museum have just announced the release of new, jointly developed free curriculum that schools can use with students to discuss the events of September 11, 2001. The new resources coincide with the 10th anniversary of the tragedy and focus primarily on the sacrifices made by first responders that day. The materials are intended to teach from the point of view that this was an attack on freedoms shared not only by New Yorkers but by the entire nation.

According to the news release issued at the beginning of this month by the New York Schools Chancellor's Office, teachers are encouraged to integrate these lessons into the school year. The materials are meant  for use in Social Studies, History, English Language Arts, and Art.

These lesson plans, written with the help of New York City public school teachers, are divided into four categories: Historical Impact; Community & Conflict; Heroes & Service; and Memory & Memorialization.  The entire program is also designed to build and strengthen writing and critical thinking skills.

Babies Born on 9-11-01 Book Review

5th post in an 11-Day 9/11 Memorial Series

This post, a review of the book Faces of Hope - Babies Born on 9/11, published by HCI, is fifth in MBE's special 11 Days of September memorial series.  Author Christine Pisera Naman, delivered her son Trevor on that fateful day almost 10 years ago.  In the days following the World Trade Center terrorist disaster she felt compelled to seek out other moms who shared the common experience of bringing a child into the world on a day when almost 3000 other families lost a mom, a dad, a son, or a daughter, in a matter of minutes.

September 11 - Hope & Renewal

Published in 2002, Faces of Hope: Babies Born on 9/11, is a meaningful book featuring pictures of children from all 50 states that were born on September 11, 2001 along with wishes for each child. Part of the proceeds from the book's sales are earmarked for Twin Towers Orphans to benefit those who had lost a parent on that sad day.

Sadly, one of the book's beautiful babies representing hope for the future -- Christina Taylor Green, who was born in Maryland on 9/11/01 -- was shot to death in another act of terrorism this past January in Tucson, Arizona in the same tragedy that seriously injured U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords.

In Faces of Hope each baby photo is accompanied by a pair of inspirational quotes. The entry opposite little girl Green's picture reads, "I hope you help those in need" and "I hope you see rainbows."  On the back of her photo page it says, "I hope you jump in rain puddles."

Referencing the tragedy in Arizona, President Barak Obama said in a moving speech, "If there are rain puddles in heaven, Christina is jumping in them today. And here on Earth, we place our hands over our hearts and commit ourselves as Americans to forging a country that is forever worthy of her gentle, happy spirit. May God bless and keep those we've lost in restful and eternal peace. May He love and watch over the survivors. And may He bless the United States of America."

Faces of Hope - Babies Born on 9/11 echoes a similar sentiment.  That even in the greatest of calamities, the clouds of darkness will eventually be replaced by a new dawn. And with new life, there is always a glimmer of hope to light the way toward a better future.  A new sequel book called Faces of Hope - 10 Years Later was recently released with updated photos of all the babies in the first book.

In paperback with black and white photos of babies representing births in every state in the USA, Faces of Hope - Babies Born on 9/11, $9.95, is available online, at bookstores, and direct from the publisher HCI.  A new book -- not reviewed in this post -- is Faces of Hope - 10 Years Later, $10.95, and is also available from the same sources.

Something to think about: Do you know someone who has a September 11th birthday or do you have a child that was born on that historic date in 2001? How has this affected the way you celebrate their day of birth each year?
