A Family Trip to Europe & Israel Reveals New Discoveries of Toyota as a Global Brand

Automotive

Ever since I was first selected as a member of the Toyota Women Influencers Network about six months ago, I've never stopped learning about all things Toyota. For sure all the different auto models offered by this major car maker are mind-boggling -- there is really a vehicle for every lifestyle for just about any budget.  Along the way, I've become aware that Toyota USA makes a significant contribution to American employment in the automotive industry through its three very busy U.S. manufacturing plants, too.

Old-fashioned desert transportation: My Triplets, Negev Desert, Israel
Yet, it wasn't until our family took a vacation trip to Europe this summer that I realized that Toyota isn't just in Japan and the USA, it's also popular abroad with visibility in so many other places I hadn't realized before -- in Europe as well as Israel. Indeed, Toyota was in every country we visited in June and July: France, the Czech Republic, Holland and Israel.

Toyota in Amsterdam, Holland where bikes even outnumber cars
I've been to Europe numerous times before but this trip turned out to be really different. As retold in this post I saw through cities and countries we visited through the eyes of an ambassador for Toyota. Every where we went I was on the lookout for Toyota vehicles. Almost without exception, in each region we toured, I saw few larger Toyota vehicles such as flat bed trucks, SUVs and other gas guzzlers.

Parking spots along the canals are at a premium in Amsterdam
The fact that there are so many smaller cars isn't really surprising, especially when you consider that fuel is even more expensive in both Europe and the Middle East than it is here in America. In fact gas was the equivalent of about $7.50 U.S. dollars per gallon in Israel and Europe prices weren't much different.

Toyota on an Israeli highway in the interior of this small country
The majority of the foreign Toyotas I saw were primarily compacts and subcompacts, small enough to fit down the centuries-old narrow cobblestone streets that are common in many big cities in older parts of the modern world such as Jerusalem, Prague, Paris, and Amstersdam.

Prague Cathedral, streets are narrow in ancient cities like this in the Czech Republic
Particularly throughout the State of Israel and in the antiquated city of Amsterdam I was excited to see an obvious commitment to green living. Evidence of greater fuel efficiency in practice was everywhere with all the different types of hybrid and energy-efficient Prius cars both parked and driving local streets and freeways.

On this trip our family of 6 walked up stairs to the top of Eiffel Tour, Paris
I did find a few Toyotas here and there in Prague. But Toyotas were ever present en masse in places like Holland and Israel where other modes of transportation often supersede the automobile.

Toyota with Rijks Museum, Amsterdam, Holland in background
For example, Amsterdam is the bicycle capital of the world with more people pedaling their way around the city than people who drives cars -- yet it didn't seem hard to find different types of Toyotas from Camry and Prius to Corolla and Yaris models dotting the streets. Likewise in Israel where camels are still used for transportation by the Bedouins of the Negev Desert, I noticed plenty of Toyotas in all the towns, farm villages, kibbutzim and major metropolitan areas like Jerusalem and Tel Aviv that we visited.

On the road to Jerusalem, Israel another Toyota is sighted

Looking for Toyotas wherever we went was definitely not something I planned on doing when we set out on this trip. Yet it opened my eyes yet to another facet of the brand I had never considered before. In fact, one of the true highlights of my hunt for Toyota adventure on this vacation was discovering Toyota's main office in Israel emblazoned with the family company name on a high rise beside the freeway on the way into Tel Aviv.

Toyota Israel Headquarters, Tel Aviv

This is definitely one vacation that I'll remember for a long time. Taking pictures of cars and having my family help me find Toyotas to photograph for this post was a blast.

Dannon to Launch Activia Breakfast Blend Yogurt at BlogHer 2012 in New York this Week

Good Food

When I was a little girl growing up in the 1960s my mother always made everything from scratch and prepared lots of healthy foods for our family. But she never served yogurt. So I didn't even have my first product in this dairy food category until I was in high school while at a friend's house.

Me at 3 years old, Vintage Family Photo 1960
That first-time experience for me was Dannon Yogurt and many years later it's still my go-to brand not only for myself but for what I like to buy for my four kids including triplets.  Thanks to my mom for teaching me that breakfast should never be skipped and really is the most important meal of the day and thanks to my friend who lived across the street for introducing me to Dannon so long ago.

In recent years Dannon has expanded its yogurt options with a brand line called Activia that I'm also a big fan of. So, when I was asked to join the Dannon BlogHer Ambassadors to help launch the NEW Activia Breakfast Blend line-up that will be available for sampling at BlogHer 2012 in New York later this week I was thrilled to have the opportunity.

I haven't tasted the newest addition to the Activia family, Activia Breakfast Blend, yet since it's not available at my market in my hometown in California. But, I can't wait to try it at BlogHer and will be blogging about the experience both during the conference and afterward so watch MBE for more news.

Activia Yogurt by Dannon currently at my local market
What I can tell you though is that this yogurt stands out not only because it is creamy and thick but it is lowfat too.

According to the brand it helps regulate your digestive system since each Activia Breakfast Blend serving includes the exclusive probiotic culture Bifidus Regularis along with other healthy ingredients.*
*When consumer daily for two weeks as part of a balanced and healthy lifestyle.

What's even better is that the new yogurt collection delivers twice the amount of protein as the regular low fat yogurt.** It tastes good, too, and comes mixed with grains and natural flavors. Initially Activia Breakfast Blend -- which comes in 50% bigger cups than the 4 oz 4 pack of Activia -- is being offered in four delicious-sounding varieties.
**Contains 14% more of the DV of protein (7g) than regular lowfat yogurt)
  • Apple Cinnamon
  • Banana Bread
  • Maple & Brown Sugar
  • Vanilla
Apples & Bananas are among the healthful ingredients in Activia Breakfast Blend Yogurt
If you're lucky enough to be registered for BlogHer August 4-5, 2012, you are invited to stop by Dannon's booth in the conference's Expo Hall to try one or all of the selections in this wonderful new healthy dairy food collection. There you can not only be among the first to try this new product that you will want to share with your readers whether your blog is food-focused or more of a family lifestyle one.

Activia Breakfast Blend is available as a four-pack and carries an MSRP of $3.99. For more information visit the Activia website as well as follow @Dannon on Twitter and be sure to like Activia on Facebook.

However, my opinions are entirely my own and I have not been paid to publish positive comments. See complete FTC Disclosure information that appears at the bottom of MommyBlogExpert's main page and at the bottom of every individual post on this blog, including this one.

Summer is a favorite time of year for me. Over the years I've enjoyed many July and August road trips criss crossing America both with my family when I was a child and now with my own family that includes hubbie plus two sons and two daughters.

The vintage and modern images illustrating this post capture just a small part of all the memories of the natural beauty I've personally experienced both inside National Parks and on the multitude of scenic byways and back roads that wind through the Lower 48 contiguous U.S. that I've traveled.

August may be just around the corner but there's still plenty of summertime left for you to do some road tripping of your own to witness nature for yourself and at the same time in the process enter to win a brand new vehicle that is gentler on the environment.

Microsoft Windows Style Makeover - Try out for a Leading Role in the Brand's Big BlogHer 2012 Event

Makeover

I'd like to preface this post by saying I admire all of the other female bloggers in the wings that are trying out for the Microsoft Windows Style Makeover sweepstakes. Among you are some of the smartest, most creative and talented women and moms I know in the business. Truly I'm humbled to be among competitors like you all. Best of luck to everyone with a wish that your ultimate style dreams come true!

Now without further adieu, my post entry...

The Prologue
In As You Like It by William Shakespeare, "All the world's a stage and all the men and women merely players. They have their exits and their entrances; and one man in his time plays many parts."

That play's passage may have first been uttered between 1599 and the early 1600s, but I think it still rings true today if you interpret as I do the reference to "man" to extend to woman as well. In a nutshell this piece of classic literature pretty much sums up my perspective on BlogHer 2012 as well as my roles in life professionally as a blogger and personally as a mom, wife, daughter, and friend.

At the upcoming conference whether one has the lead role, a supporting part or working as a background actress each woman attending is an integral member of the cast of characters. Based on all the current buzz on Twitter and Facebook I'd say just about everyone wants to make a grand entrance next weekend.  As a blogger myself I'm no exception. In between my crazy busy life as a mom of four -- including triplets that were born within a year and who once were all in diapers at the same time -- it seems for sure that I've been rehearsing for this all-important part ever since the last big event 12 months ago.

With opening night just a week away, it's almost time for the big performance event and I feel like I'm ready to shine on the stage. I know my lines, I have my flight and hotel booked, and I've got my schedule organized.  Homemade meals have been cooked for my family and already are tucked into the freezer so my hubbie and kids won't starve while I'm away. And, believe it or not, I'm finally caught up on all the laundry a family of six that includes four teens produces. Even my bags are all packed and standing by the door. Oh, how I can't wait to get to New York to connect with brands and bloggers, rekindling old relationships while building new, long-lasting ones.

Everything appears to be going great. Then I wake up from this daydream. Uh-oh. I've just realized there's a problem, a very big one at that. The show's makeup artists and costume designers are no where to be found and I really need help with my head to toe look so I can make a splash on the BlogHer red carpet. Right now I may be just an understudy for one of leading characters but I sure could use the help of the Windows Makeover stylist team to have a crack at a chance to step into the spotlight with four other leading ladies come August 3 when the winners will be announced.

What's My Style?
From an artistic perspective I think I'm a blank canvas ready to be painted. Or rather to keep within the theme of this post, I'm a modern-day Shakespeare masterpiece waiting to be written. A story that makes the most of my body type taking into account my long arms and legs and 5'9" average frame.

Me modeling a symmetrical coat by British Designer Isabella Oliver
With that said if I had to pin my type on Pinterest and via the various images I've picked to illustrate this post entry, I'd say I'm a fun-loving woman who revels in mixing things up, blending this season's classic and feminine styles with things already in my closet accented by vintage finds and an artistic thread that runs through everything, pulling it all together.

I'm also admittedly a tech geek both in my work and family lives so my look will of course not be complete without the latest tech gear and gadgets which I hope include a brand new Windows 7 PC with Windows 8 upgrade offer. If I'm privileged to be selected as a winner not only will I wear this trendy laptop to accessorize my makeover and new wardrobe. I'll also use it while working as a blogger both in my home office and on the road when traveling.

This Microsoft technological wonder would certainly be a G-d send to help manage our busy family home life and the community service projects I volunteer for, too. That's not even to mention that this will make it possible for my entire family to enjoy some time together tapping into all its entertainment capabilities. And, how could I forget especially since the workers just cut the power off accidentally this morning while I was trying to finish writing? I can't think of a more awesome tool than this to assist me with the major kids bathroom renovation that's going on in the next room as I type out this post!

The Wrap Up
At 55 I'm probably the oldest contestant in this contest. Then again, I'm likely also to be the only gal who can make the dubious claim to have started my career right around the time when the first PC came out and when Microsoft, the company, was just beginning to bloom. What a privilege it has been to have lived through that era and to still be alive today and to see how far technology has advanced during my lifetime.

Personality wise I'm at ease as a mother, wife and mommy blogger, leading an equally active and introspective lifestyle. I'm a Renaissance woman, passionate about everything I do from writing Mommy Blog Expert to skiing in winter and playing tennis in summer to traveling domestically and abroad to tending my organic garden, all while striving to fit a quality family lifestyle and the nurturing of deep friendships into the formula.

Age for me is an asset rather than a liability. I actually only feel like I'm in my late 30s or early 40s and have the energy to match which is one reason why I find BlogHer so invigorating. But, at the same time, I definitely am not trying to directly compete with my two darling 15 year-old daughters who are budding drama queens and fashionistas either in overall attitude or style.

I wish I could say that my present wardrobe evokes that fashion and tech style vibe, but to be honest neither does. Yet. That in fact is why I'm hoping to be selected for a makeover at BlogHer courtesy of the Microsoft Windows brand.

It's almost last curtain call now and I wish everyone else who also wants to be there when the curtain goes up and the winners are revealed to as they say in show business, "Break a leg."

The suspense is building and the hush of the crowd is ironically almost deafening. Rest assured, though, that BlogHer will be here very soon and the Final Five will be unveiled. If you ask me that day can't come soon enough.

As for me, to quote the opening line of Hamlet, another Shakespeare play, "To be or not to be? That is the question."

In writing this post, I'm entering the Microsoft Windows Style Makeover sweepstakes for a chance to win a head to toe makeover!

FTC Disclosure: I did not receive payment for this post. As explained in the content above I have written this post as my entry into the Microsoft Windows Style Makeover sweepstakes. See detailed FTC disclosure at the bottom of this and every post more details.
