Parenting Style Soft or Strong - Is There a Right or Wrong Way to Raise a Child Today

Parenting

What is your parenting style? Are you strong -- a believer in tough love -- or are you more of a softie when it comes to teaching responsibility and disciplining your child? Or like me, are you wondering if it's even possible to walk the line between both modern day strategies and still be an effective parent?

Hubbie & kids in Prague, Czech Republic, Summer 2012
As the mom of four teens all born within a year (triplets plus one) who are now in high school I sometimes view myself as being overly strict and at other moments taking the easy way out with leniency. As a matter of fact: some days I think some of my kids think I'm Mommy Dearest and other days they view me as a Jewish Mother Theresa.

For sure having two girls and two boys that are all so close in age does present its challenges. I find that issues and problems do indeed vary by gender in our household and because my kids were born very close together these bumps in our family life can be magnified three- and four-fold at times. The resulting ways I end up deciding how to handle things cover the full spectrum, too, depending on my own mood at the time as well as who did what and under what circumstances.

Anyone who has ever raised a daughter or son, including my own dear mother who tolerated my teenage angst, knows that kids this age don't always do what you want them to do. Along with the daily annoyances and conflicts I find myself constantly making a conscious intervention, trying to keep my cool, to not to be unreasonable. After all I do have a lot to be thankful for. My children are overall good kids, law-abiding citizens, hard-working students, and dedicated community volunteers. Nevertheless to say everything is perfect would not be telling the whole story.

The six of us love skiing together on family vacations
As is typical of many other moms in my shoes raising teenage girls right now I have the usual struggles with my 15 year-old daughters about things like modest, age-appropriate dressing, makeup and general demeanor. Thankfully wardrobe violations aren't a problem with my boys. But let me assure you that I have other minor conflicts with my guys like when they sometimes want to tinker with electronics instead of doing their chores.

Through the various disturbances -- some more intense than others -- I've responded in both soft and strong ways. My tough love side has found me grounding my kids, taking away their access to technology for weeks and months at a time, and even sending them to bed without dinner. On the flip side of the coin, other times the soft side of me dictates leniency, that there be no punishment at all and that I look the other way instead. I know my kind of parenting isn't consistent but it seems to be working reasonably well, at least for our family.

You can read all kinds of parenting books and get advice from friends and family on how they suggest you handle things. But remember: everyone's situation and standards are different -- and so is each child's natural personality and tendencies that we must nuture as parents. What's right for one child or family simply isn't going to work for all of us. So, take into consideration your own feelings (and that of any other parent figure involved) and the needs of your child. Then, simply give yourself permission to be the kind of parent that you think is best.

As long as your child feels loved by you and you find your own way to be involved in his or her life in a meaningful way, it won't matter whether you choose a soft or strong parenting style or a combination of both approaches.

Do you consider yourself a soft or strong parent? Or is your parenting style a combination of both? What are some examples of that parenting approach? You're invited to leave a comment below this post to share your thoughts.

Yom Kippur 9 Symbols for Joyful Observance on Holiest Day of Year on Jewish Calendar

Celebrations

For Jews around the world tonight begins the 25-hour observance of Yom Kippur, the holiest day on the Jewish calendar. Contrary to popular belief this holiday -- though we fast and pray in the synagogue this evening and all day tomorrow -- isn't really a solemn day. Instead, Orthodox, Conservative, Reform and Reconstructionist Rabbis alike encourage congregants to view this day as a joyful one because we are thinking positively about being inscribed in the Book of Life for the coming year.

May each of us merit to be inscribed in the Book of Life

Symbols of the High Holidays Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are beautifully depicted in this one-of-a-kind intricately embroidered art quality holiday challah cover from Jerusalem.

Vinturi Essential Wine Aerator Review

Wine

"After all, don't most moms need a glass of wine at the end of the day?"  Did I see you raise your hand to say yes to that question? I know I sure did. That's because I consider myself a wine aficionado and I enjoy a glass almost every day for its on sake. I also admit that it often helps me relax while my four high school students are doing their schoolwork at home each evening.

Vinturi Red Wine Aerator, center stage

MBE partnered with Vinturi for this story, post contains affiliate links

Yes, that's an actual quote from the email pitch I received from the PR company representing a company named Vinturi, inviting me to take a look at their wine aerators here on Mommy Blog Expert.

While I do savor good wine and am constantly educating myself about how to appreciate it more, I have to say as a wine connoisseur I was somewhat skeptical at first about whether or not any sort of aerator would really improve the wine appreciation experience further  -- especially because my husband and I always let our wine breath after popping the cork before enjoying it and we also prefer quality better wines in the $45+ per bottle range.

Hubbie and me, Kosher Food & Wine Festival

Long story short is that the brand sent the elegant modern-looking Vinturi Essential Red Wine Aerator designed exclusively for aeration of red wine to try out for this review. This comes beautifully boxed so it will look nice on your table or on display in either the liquor cabinet or on your wine rack. It consists of three parts: the aerator, a no-drip stand and filter screen that you can easily clean by rinsing with water after each use.

Beautifully boxed makes a lovely host or hostess gift

The aerator might look complicated to use in the photos I took, but it is actually quite fast and simple to employ. Following the enclosed instruction card likely you'll be a pro at aerating in no time and your guests will be impressed.

All you do is take it out of the box and hold the aerator in one hand over your glass and carefully pour the wine from the bottle. You'll know it's working properly when you hear a bubbling, hissing sound -- reassuring you that it is aerating your drink.

Then when you're done dispensing wine into your glass, simply place the aerator in the stand that's fitted with a removable filter screen and enjoy your wine with family or friends.

Vinturi Red Wine Aerator shown with included stand
Vinturi aerator stand, filter screen

Since the first test about a month ago I've used this aerator every time I've had a glass of red wine. I've tried it with a range of red varietals: Syrah, Petit Syrah, Pinot Noir, Alicante Bouschet, Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, and several blends. In my personal experience with each of these red wines the aeration consistently provided by the Vinturi wine aerator did not disappoint.

The only thing I think that could have been a bit better is the aerator's stand. While this is particularly useful to avoid spillage when you are serving red wine at a table covered with a white tablecloth like we do and it did not tip over when we used it, I wish it had a slightly more stable feel when placing the aerator into the stand to catch any drips.

No brand's aerator is going to improve a bad or poor quality wine. So it's important to keep in mind that the amount of improvement you are likely to experience with the ingenious product featured in this review will depend on the wine's quality, age and variety that you are starting with.

In summary my husband and I agree that the aerator we tested lived up to the claims on the product's packaging. Namely that the Vinturi for Red Wine Aerator opened up more bouquet and flavor and produced a smoother finish, resulting in an overall higher quality wine enjoyment experience for us.

Perfect for year round as well as your own holiday table, this would also make a wonderful host or hostess gift. The Vinturi Red Wine Aerator is available on Amazon direct from Vinturi.com. Other products in the collection include the Vinturi White Wine Aerator, the Red and White Wines Aerators SetOn Wine Bottle Aerator, 7-piece Wine Opener, Air Pump, and Stoppers set, Vertical Lever Wine Opener and more. The company also offers a variety of other beautifully designed items to enhance your drinking experience. Visit the Vinturi website to learn more, where you can sign up to be a Vinturi Enthusiast. You can also stay up to date on the latest news by following the brand on Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram and/or YouTube.

If you like good wine as much as I do, you're going to want one of these for your home bar and possibly another as a gift for someone else who enjoys wine as much as you do. And guess what?
