How to Get Involved as a Mom in World Water Day March 22 & Help People Around Globe in Need

Community

Just received an email and call to action from my friend Jennifer James, founder of Mom Bloggers for Social Good. World Water Day is coming up next Thursday, March 22. I invite you to join me in learning about ways you can make a difference by participating in one or more of the activities planned for next week.

Here in the U.S. families like mine often take water for granted. But others are not so fortunate elsewhere in the world. A child dies every 20 seconds of a water-related illness or disease. This is just one of the many tragic statistics where non profit groups like Water.org hope to make an impact.

What is World Water Day and Who is Water.Org?
World Water Day was founded in 1992-3 by the United Nations with a variety of groups over the years engaging with it to highlight a wide spectrum of impacts of water. Water.org is actively participating in development and supporting World Water Day, a designated day for building awareness about the global problems revolving around water issues and discussing solutions that will bring about positive changes.

How Can I Get Involved?
World Water Day is an excellent way for the American public to be introduced to what the water crisis is all about and how regular people like you and I can help.

First, you may want to watch this YouTube interview with actor and Water.org co-founder Matt Damon about the water crisis to understand more about some of the water issues of greatest concern.

A few other easy and quick ways to participate in World Water Day

Donate Your Voice. I've already authorized access to both my Twitter and Facebook pages so that daily messages about World Water Day will be automatically be published in my feed over the next week to spread the word to MommyBlogExpert followers in both social media communities. You can sign up until March 22 to donate your voice, too, if you wish.

Give Water. Take part in the World Water Day fundraiser. A donation of just $25 provides clean water for life for one person.

Update your Facebook Timeline Cover Photo with images like this provided by Water.org
Change Your Facebook Homepage for a Day. Save one of the provided Water.org photos (such as the one above) to your computer. Then change out your Facebook Timeline Cover Photo on your profile with one that celebrates and helps promote Water Day.

Tweet Using the #WaterDay hashtag on Twitter. Mom Bloggers for Social Good offers two suggested Tweets (listed below). You're welcome to copy and paste either for broadcasting over Twitter -- or use your own choice of words -- just be sure to use the #WaterDay hashtag for maximum message impact.

Tweet 1
On average, women walk 3.7 miles a day for @water around the globe. Raise your voice for #WaterDay #socialgoodmoms

Tweet 2
Help girls spend more time in school, less time carrying @water. Raise your voice for #WaterDay  #socialgoodmoms

This is just the tip of the iceberg of things you can do to take an active part in World Water Day. There are so many more ways to support World Water Day so definitely check them out.

Kids Movie Review & Giveaway Happy Feet Two 3D Blu-Ray DVD Combo - Contest Ends 3/28

Movie Review
Giveaway details below

All images in this post provided by Happy Feet Two

Like other sequels to recently animated films for kids such as Kung Fu Panda 2 from DreamWorks and The Weinstein Company's Hoodwinked Too! Hood vs. Evil, Happy Feet Two, the latest family-friendly production now being offered on Blu-Ray and DVD from Warner Bros. tries hard to live up to its original predecessor.

Scene from Happy Feet Two, Boxed Blu-Ray 3D & DVD released 3/13/12
Common to all three films this one succeeds with an engaging tale and double-story lines that connect moms and dads with our kids. Similar to the competing studios animated 3D features, animals take on human like personalities in Happy Feet Two to deal with people problems and real life challenges – and lessons that children can learn from.

These Happy Feet Two Characters Reflect People in Many Ways
Happy Feet Two picks up -- how else, but happily complete with tap dancing penguins -- where the first movie's lovable and funny characters of the black and white and two-footed persuasion left off. A cast of entertaining penguins along with other arctic creature voices return in the sequel with world-class talents like Robin Williams who needs practically no introduction to multiple generations of viewers giving his all in the role of convincing Ramon Lovelace.

Penguins Aren't the Only Chilly Climate Animals in this Movie
To jazz things up and add to the fun for all ages in part two of this silly and chilly saga some other leading men have joined the Happy Feet acting troupe. These include none other than Brad Pitt and Matt Damon who are the voices of Will the Krill and sidekick Bill the Krill respectively. This was obviously a wise move on the studio's part to incorporate these two award-winning blockbuster actors into the picture's mix because they both resonate well with parents -- especially moms -- and some younger grandparents of today's youth.

Good Looking Matt Damon in the Studio Voicing Character Bill the Krill
Following the highly successful Oscar-winning cartoon original movie Happy Feet which grossed $42 million during its initial three days at the box office back in 2006, Happy Feet Two was released in theaters for the 2011 holidays. Now to the delight of families including mine, it has just been released on Blu-ray and DVD for home viewing.

The new release as of March 13, 2012 is available online and in-store in three formats
  • Happy Feet Two UltraViolet Digital
  • Happy Feet Two Blu-ray  + UltraViolet Digital Combo
  • Happy Feet Two Blu-ray 3D + UltraViolet Digital Combo
Additionally there is now a Happy Feet Two iTunes Movie App app that’s worth checking out and downloading, too.

The best news is that you should read on so that you can enter to win the Happy Feet Two Blu-ray 3D - DVD Combo that Mommy Blog Expert is giving away to one lucky winner!

Mothers Against Drunk Driving Power of Youth Video Contest for Teens, 5 iPad Prizes - Ends April 27

Contest
Teen Video Competition

I've written before about the importance of teen driving safety education and parental involvement with adolescents. Morally as a professional blogger and personally as a mother of four teens -- Girl, Girl, Boy Triplets plus a son just one year older who will be getting his driver's license soon -- I feel there's something else that is a true public service to share with every American family. All MBE readers who have teens are invited to join me in encouraging your teenage kids to enter the 2012 Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) Power of You(th) Video Contest.

My Teens Have Attitudes, Doesn't Every Kid at This Stage?
Like all concerned moms and dads, I can't agree more with MADD that underage drinking is not only not cool, it can be downright deadly.  That said, in alignment with this national nonprofit group, I am hoping that teens across America will actively engage in the conversation by participating in the organization's fun and equally informative video contest.

"The Power of You(th) is the power you hold to save some of the 6,000 lives that are lost each year because of underage drinking," explains MADD. "We invite teens to take a stand and create a short video that encourages peers to avoid drinking alcohol and to never even get in a car as a passenger with someone who's been drinking."

Great Prizes: An iPad Plus a Trip to Dallas For Each of 5 Finalists
Each of five finalists will win a new iPad. These winners also get an all-expense paid trip for themselves and one guardian to Dallas in June 2012 for the Teen Influencer Summit to help create a national initiative. As a member of MADD's National Teen Influencer Group comprised of young people from all over America they'll be part of a collective making a real difference by influencing their friends and making an impact in their schools, homes and communities.

The Grand Prize Winner will also receive an all-expense paid trip for himself/herself and one guardian to Washington D.C. for MADD’s National Conference in September 2012.

MADD Power of You(th)
Teen Video Contest
Submissions due by April 27, 2012
Entry Details  HERE

There's another opportunity for our kids to help counter the unfortunate reality that 1 in 5 teens indulge in binge drinking.

Teens -- even those not interested in entering the current video contest -- can also do something else very positive for themselves and their friends. How? Teens can easily take a stand by signing pledges via the MADD Power of You(th) Facebook Page to not drink before age 21 and to never ride in a car with someone who’s been drinking. Kids can also enter to win NFL prizes by drafting friends to follow their leads and also sign pledges on that page.

The Power of You(th) Teen community outreach program is orchestrated by nonprofit Mothers Against Drunk Driving and is made possible by national presenting sponsor State Farm
