Disney Tomorrowland Movie Review Young Actresses Shine Opposite George Clooney

Following its debut over Memorial Day Weekend, the movie Tomorrowland owned the top box office slot beating out second-ranked Pitch Perfect 2 despite pulling in just $41.7 million in receipts, far less than the $50 million originally projected. Disappointing movie opening revenue aside, this latest Disney adventure film is still worth seeing.

Directed by Brad Bird and inspired by the Tomorrowland that Walt Disney envisioned at Disneyland in 1955, this movie is an adventure mystery story about looking optimistically toward the future. Bound by a shared destiny, former boy genius (George Clooney) who is marred with disillusionment teams up with Casey (Britt Robertson), a fearless teen with intense scientific curiosity. Together they embark on a dangerous mission in time and space to unearth the secrets about a place known simply as Tomorrowland. What they find and experience along the way changes both their lives forever.

My insightful 17 year-old son Jacob, who accompanie me to the screening at the El Capitan Theater in Hollywood, pinned this motion picture as a kind of cross between Meet The Robinsons and The Jetsons. After talking in depth about it after the show, both of us agree that one of the movie's strongest selling points is its talent. 

For sure, Double Academy Award and Triple Golden Globe Award winner George Clooney is good as former boy genius Frank Walker. But it's the young kids who upstage the senior actor, particularly 20-something Britt Robertson as Casey Newton and 12 year-old Raffey Cassidy as Athena, who deliver perhaps their greatest performances to date.




American actress Robertson began her career in TV with Growing Pains: Return of the Seavers in 2004. Prior to Tomorrowland, she had a major role in the film The Longest Ride playing opposite Scott Eastwood.

Meanwhile, British actress Cassidy has accomplished so much in her short career having appeared both in Snow White and the Huntsman and Dark Shadows in 2012. And to think she's still just a tween!

Together these young ladies brilliantly rise above the seemingly daunting challenge of supporting actresses to the great George Clooney. In fact, it wouldn't be a stretch to say that both of their electrifying female screen presences often outshine him as the plot moves forward. See this movie to find out what I mean.
