Pi Day Math STEM Kids Fun Activities to Celebrate March 14th

Today, March 14th, is Pi Day. This holiday is celebrated annually around the world by lovers of math and engineering. It's also an excellent opportunity for parents and educators to get kids as young as preschoolers excited about STEM and to learn what the basic mathematical constant π (the Greek letter "Pi") is all about.

Ideas to have Fun with Pi

First of all, most important: Whatever activities you do, encourage the kids to enjoy themselves. Equally, be sure to integrate an important math lesson and circle back to the true meaning of Pi : the mathematics symbol π is used to represent a constant, the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter which is 3.14159265359.

Speaking of Pi, I can't think of a better way to celebrate than to eat lots of P-I-E! Check out these pie recipes made with Wholly Wholesome organic and OU kosher ready-made crusts: Pecan, Peanut Butter or Apple Crumble and bake something delicious.

Why not encourage boys and girls to have a pie throwing contest? It's as easy as pie, to load up some empty aluminum pie pans with whipped cream for the kids to toss at each other to burn off all that excess energy and excitement.

And -- if it snows where you live -- get everyone outside and do something creative. If weather conditions permit, you can all create  a Pi Day outdoor snow art installation like my kids and their fellow math, computer science and engineering college students did today during the East Coast blizzard delivered by storm Stella. Come to think of it, you could easily do this type of impromptu outdoor art on the beach with sand, instead of snow, here in California, too!

The Pi Day learning possibilities are endless, just like a circle. All you need is a little creativity to inspire kids to love mathematics for life!
