How to Afford Raising Children Today

Family Money

Navigating Family Finances: Blueprint for Success

The cost to raise a single child in the United States has skyrocketed. According to the most recent statistics available, parents of a child born in 2015 will spend an estimated $233,610 to raise one son or daughter from birth until they reach age 18. This includes just basic living expenses but excludes college. Putting this into perspective, the costs of raising previous recent generations -- adjusted for inflation -- to raise a child in the 1950s averaged $2,500 to $3,000 and at the turn of the Millenium, just over two decades ago, that price per child had increased to $10,000 to $13,000 (adjusted for inflation).

For certain, for today's moms and dads, raising children is as rewarding an undertaking as it's always been. However, the reality is a modern day family also comes with a hefty price tag and there's no sign of escalating costs slowing down anytime soon.

Though expenses of raising a family may seem daunting, there are crucial steps parents might consider taking to maximize the chances of ensuring their entire family's financial security as well as setting each child up for a successful future.

6 Essential Family Money Strategies

Beyond the basics such as housing and food, when thinking about your family budget, here are some things which are all equally important, which you may not have considered before.

Life Insurance Coverage

Even before your first child is born, securing cheap term life insurance is an imperative first step in protecting your family's financial stability. A comprehensive life insurance policy, ideally one that does not require a medical exam to set up, should cover both parents until the child reaches at least 18 years old. This ensures that, in the unfortunate event of a parent's passing, there is an adequate safety net to cover expenses and provide for your child's/children's needs a least until they reach adulthood and can potentially support themselves.

Interest-Bearing Bank Accounts, Investments

One of the next approaches parents should consider taking is to establish an interest-bearing account or invest in Certificates of Deposit (CDs) and other long-term investments with the highest yield possible. U.S. Savings Bonds are another way to securely invest money for your child's future. These accounts provide a solid foundation for your child's financial outlook in the years ahead. By starting early, you can take advantage of compound interest, allowing your money to grow over time.

Kids Saving Money Financial Literacy

Financial Literacy and Budgeting

Teaching children financial literary, to manage money effectively is a lifelong gift. This is especially true considering that as of 2023, Americans are collectively facing a personal credit card debt of more than $1 trillion. By setting a positive example and involving them in age-appropriate discussions about family finances, you empower them with valuable life skills. Encourage them to save a portion of their allowance, budget for discretionary spending, and understand the importance of financial responsibility. For older children and teens, there are apps to help parents teach kids about banking and investing.

College 529 Scholarship Plan

With costs continuing to rise exponentially, investing in education and starting to save for college as early as at birth, is one of the greatest gifts you can give your child. Something you might not know much about is a College 529 plan. This is a tax-advantaged savings account designed specifically for future educational expenses which both you and other family members can gift funds towards. By contributing regularly and adding this line item to your monthly budget, you can build a substantial fund to cover tuition, books, and other educational costs. This forward-thinking approach can alleviate the burden of student loans in your child's future.

Comprehensive Health Insurance

Adequate healthcare coverage is a non-negotiable aspect of family finances. Health, dental, and orthodontics insurance policies provide essential protection against unexpected medical expenses which could otherwise potentially bankrupt you. Accidents and injuries requiring medical attention can and do happen to kids, so the odds are against you if you try and manage without any insurance. By addressing potential health concerns and taking them seriously through ensuring you maintain adequate health insurance, you can save significant amounts of out of pocket expenses in the long run.

Strategic Daily Shopping Strategies

Saving money on everyday necessities is another often overlooked aspect of family finances. By employing savvy shopping techniques such as hunting for sales, comparison shopping, and using discount codes for online purchases, you can significantly stretch your budget, freeing up money to fund your child's future. Every dollar saved is an investment in your family's collective and individual financial security.

Whale Kids Night Light

Cloud b Tranquil Whale Family Mom Review

"We were facing that all too familiar parenting challenge when our 5 year-old son, Izzy, was scared of sleeping in his dark room alone," explains Rachel Marks, the mother of three children age five and under. "While seeking a solution that would help him feel safe and secure, we discovered the 2-piece Cloud b Tranquil Whale Family night light projector set which is pictured at the top of this story.

"This adorable mama whale multi-media night light with the accompanying soft plush whale rattle quickly have together become our son's nightly buddies and protectors," Rachel continues. "While he cuddles the huggable plush infant blue sea mammal, the gentle, soothing glow of an ocean scene projected by the mama whale provides just the right amount of light to chase away shadows and creates a comforting ambiance in his room that gently lulls him to sleep. The daily evening light show which dances on the walls and ceiling of his room, combined with this night light system's white noise, calming soft whale sounds and melodies, is like bringing a piece of the seashore into our son's bedroom.

"Now that Izzy has overcome his fear of the dark," Rachel reflects, "we've noticed a significant improvement in his sleep patterns. Now he looks forward to going to bed each night. While he snuggles his beloved baby whale, mama whale sits on his night table producing a light and sound show that help him drift off to sleep peacefully. This has not only helped him feel safe, it has also provided a sense of routine and comfort which I think is something that every child really needs to get a good night's rest."

Toddler Girl Playing With Pink Light Up Turtle

Cloud b Tranquil Turtle Mom Review

Sarah, the first-time mommy of a 1 year-old little girl, has already gotten a little taste of bedtime bedlam herself.

"Avigayil seems awful smart for her age,"  Sarah says. "I've noticed that as I get her ready for bed each night, changing her diaper and dressing her in pajamas, she somehow has a sixth sense that lights out and the time to go to sleep are quickly approaching. Before we set up the Cloud b Tranquil Turtle in her room, she didn't want to go to sleep quietly and would often protest and cry after I kissed her good night and closed her bedroom door.

"That dramatic fussiness has all changed," Sarah relates. "Now my daughter is mesmerized by her pretty pink Cloud b turtle's blue ocean wave lights twinkling around her crib and bed, accompanied by a mini concert of white noise and soft ocean-inspired music every evening. What a pleasure it is to sneak a peek and eavesdrop on her through our baby monitor as she calmly and playfully bables and interacts with the lights she sees and the sweet little sounds she hears.

"Before the turtle light's automatic timer even turns off the light and sound, she is sleeping soundly," Sarah concludes. "I'm a strong believer in establishing healthy behavior patterns early in my child's life and I look forward to Avigayil enjoying this fun, calming night time tradition for years to come as she grows older. In fact, I can't wait to hear the name she gives her new nightime turtle friend when she begins to talk."

Kids Colds Tips to Help Children Feel Better

Why Babies & Toddlers Get Sick and How to Comfort Them

Got Kids? It’s back-to-school time and that can also mean it’s time for the common cold season to possibly follow your family home. According to the Mayo Clinic within the first year of life, most babies have six to eight colds. They might get even more colds if they are in day care where they interact with other young kids.

Toddler Girl With Cold Blowing Nose

Children seem to be a magnet for germs, don't they? In another study at The University of Texas Health Science Center at SanAntonio and University Hospital found that families with six kids had a viral detection 87% of the year. Childless households, on the other hand, only had a viral detection 7% of the year.

The same study found that children under age 5 were infected with some kind of respiratory virus 50% of the year. That’s twice as often as older kids and adults. Viral detection does not always mean that there is an illness, but when they were infected, the littlest kids were 1.5 times more likely to have symptoms, like fever or wheezing.

There’s even more proof. A study conducted during the 2009 H1N1 influenza pandemic by the Utah BetterIdentification of Germs-Longitudinal Viral Epidemiology found that families with multiple children had a respiratory viral infection in the household for more than half of the year between August 2009 and August 2010.

Recognizing Cold Symptoms in Infants

Typically, the onset includes a congested or runny nose and possibly changing nasal discharge. Progression might bring about fever, sneezing, fussiness, trouble nursing due to congestion, and reduced appetite.

When to Seek Medical Advice

Even though a majority of baby colds self-resolve in about 10-14 days, vigilant symptom tracking is crucial. For babies under 3 months, it's advised to seek medical guidance at the cold's onset, especially if accompanied by fever. For older babies and toddlers, always consult a trusted healthcare professional if symptoms seem severe, persistent, or alarming in any way.

Understanding Causes and Risks

The common cold in babies can arise from one of many viruses, with rhinoviruses being the most usual culprit. Modes of transmission include airborne spread, direct human contact, or interaction with infected surfaces. Factors like their still-maturing immune systems and higher exposure to other kids amplify their infection risk.

Protection and Prevention

While there's no absolute way to prevent colds, practicing consistent hygiene (like frequent and thorough hand washing with soap and water), limiting exposure to sick individuals, cleaning toys regularly, and educating families on hygienic practices can help reduce the likelihood of catching a cold.

What Parents Should Keep in A Medical Toolbox

Since colds are likely to be a common occurrence for babies, children, and the rest of the family, keeping a few items on hand can help to identify symptoms and keep a child comfortable. The important thing is to be prepared with all items kept in one place (even a shoebox will work!) so that everything is easy to find even when things get hectic. It's also important for parents to ask your doctor about which Over The Counter (OTC) medications are appropriate for your child.

Other helpful items to have at home:

The Evenflo PreciseRead Touchless Forehead Thermometer utilizes cutting-edge infrared technology to measure temperature without any direct contact. This reduces the risk of transferring germs and ensures a smooth process for your child. Whether your child is resting or active, a quick sweep with this device gives an accurate temperature reading in just a few seconds, making it simpler than ever to monitor their health.

Addressing the common cold in babies centers around relieving their symptoms. Key steps include keeping them well-hydrated, ensuring the air is moist, and assisting in keeping their nasal pathways clear. All parents know the disruption a slight cold or nasal blockage can bring to a peaceful night for both the baby and you. The solution? The Evenflo QuickAction Electric Nasal Aspirator. With its USB charging feature, it provides a steady yet gentle suction. Not only does it efficiently clear blocked noses, but it also prioritizes your baby's comfort.

My Family's Hands On Experience

I'm thrilled to share my wonderful personal experience at Cardboard City with my two sons, Izzy (age 5) and Ori (age 2). From the moment we stepped into this magical, creative wonderland, we were met with warmth and enthusiasm by delightful staff members, Emeeka Simmons and Jennifer Racusin. Their patience and genuine interest in making our visit enjoyable made all the difference. The main highlight of our visit was the opportunity to let our imaginations run wild as we embarked on two fantastic cardboard crafting projects.

With the assistance of Emeeka and Jennifer, both full-time art teachers, we embarked on creating a cardboard version of Catboy from PJ Masks, one of my boys' favorite characters. The excitement and joy in the kids' eyes as we transformed a simple cardboard into a superhero together were truly priceless. Next, we decided to construct a cardboard house and decorate it with cork people.

Toddler Girl Playing With Recycled Cardboard

The creativity flowed effortlessly, and I was impressed by how skillfully staffers guided my sons, helping them bring their ideas to life. As a parent, it was heartwarming to see them working together and bonding over their shared craft projects. Even my youngest, my 8-month-old daughter, wasn't left out of the fun! She was provided with a safe and enjoyable play area where she could explore and interact with cardboard in her own way. Watching her laughter and curiosity as she explored the cardboard sizes textures and shapes was truly heartwarming.

But the experience didn't end with crafting projects alone. Jennifer, with warm storytelling vibes, captivated all of us, young and old alike. She painted vivid worlds with her words, and it was evident that she loved her craft. My boys were mesmerized, hanging on to every word she said as she read to them. It was a beautiful and interactive storytelling session that left us with cherished memories.

Throughout the day, Emeeka and Jennifer made us feel as if we were more than just customers; they made us feel like family. They went above and beyond to ensure our visit was enjoyable and memorable, from start to finish. From offering helpful tips during the crafting process to engaging in light-hearted conversations, their genuine care and attention to detail were evident in every interaction.

Family Kids Recycling Cardboard Into Art

Cardboard City at Westfield Century City truly excels in fostering creativity and family bonding. The cozy and inviting atmosphere combined with the attentive staff created an environment where all ages from a variety of backgrounds can feel comfortable exploring their imaginations. As a parent, I appreciated how the activities catered to children of various ages, making it a perfect family outing.

The joy of crafting with my hubbie and sons, seeing their smiles and laughter, and experiencing the magic of storytelling all in one place was an unforgettable, fanciful experience. Thank you, Cardboard City and staff for providing us with such a pleasantly positive and memorable day. We can't wait to return and transform recycled cardboard into more beautiful crafts and artwork together as a family.

To sum it all up, I can confidently say that this visit to Cardboard City will be etched in our hearts for years to come and those of you with children who are lucky enough to be living (or visiting) the LA-area this summer should definitely consider taking your family here.
