Fun DIY Ideas to Celebrate the Jewish New Year

Here are some fun and easy ideas for crafts that kids and kid at heart adults will enjoy making to enhance the holiday of Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, which begins at sundown this Sunday, September 13, 2015.

What is Rosh Hashanah?

Unlike the secular New Year many celebrate with New Year's Eve parties on December 31st, Rosh Hashanah is experienced by going to synagogue to deeply reflect upon our good and bad deeds during the past year and to ask for G-d's forgiveness for what we did wrong and his guidance to be a better person in the coming year. Though it is intensively spiritual and retrospective, it is also a festive time of elborate meals, entertaining and quality time with family and friends -- and crafts are definitely apropo to add to the holiday's significance.

Pomegranate Paper Box

The pomegranate is a popular symbol of Rosh Hashanah because it is said there are 613 seeds in every piece of fruit, the same number of mitzvahs (positive and negative deeds in the Torah, our Bible). It also symbolizes that we hope to come before G-d to be judged for our abundant good deeds. This pomegranate box -- which you can fill with candy to take home -- is easy to create and would make a beautiful name card for each guest at the table. Grab the template from Growing Up Creative.

Apple Felt Coasters

Apples are also traditional for Rosh Hashanah as we dip them in honey at the table to wish everyone a sweet new year. These Apple Felt Coasters from Purl Bee are so festive for fall and would really take your table decor to the next level. Despite how complicated this handsewing craft may look, these pretty table accessories are actually very easy to make. Even easier is to simply cut out apple shapes from yellow, green, red and white felt, glue them together and add the seed details with a fabric friendly marking pen.

This Birthday Cake of the World celebrates Creation, after all. So what could be more perfect than making this Happy Birthday World Map Cake masterpiece table centerpiece from Chabad's The Jewish Woman which incorporates a map of the world, some round carboard boxes available at craft stores and a few other simple items?

Bee and Honey Inspired Paper Crafts

Hard to believe that this adorable Bumble Bee craft from Easy Child Crafts started out as a mere cardboard toilet paper roll. The kids will want to make multiples of these, so start gathering up those TP rolls to recycle!

Speaking of bees and recycled TP crafts... Also check out this fun Bee Hive and Bees craft from Highlights Kids that incorporates empty toilet paper cardboard rolls and a few other basic supplies.

Apple-theme Crafts

From Creative Jewish Mom comes this beautiful Watercolor Rosh Hashanah greeting card idea which is appropriate for older kids with fine motor skills and an interest in experimenting with painting. On a smaller scale, I think this could also easily work to create placecards for your holiday table. You'll find lots more apple themed kids DIY ideas here perfect for the Jewish New Year on this page, too.

Multi-Color Round Braided Bread

This vibrantly colored Braided Round Challah Bread from Couldn't Be Parve is a super fun craft recipe to make in your kitchen with your kids. Your children will delight in mixing the ingredients together, coloring the dough, rolling it out and shaping into a beautiful loaf of circular bread for your holiday table. As it rises they'll keep checking back to see how big their creation is getting before you finally pop it in the oven to bake.

Enjoy any or all of these crafts with your kids. Not only will you be spending quality time together you'll be creating family heirlooms that you will cherish for years to come.

The LA County Fair, one of the largest fairs in the country, is celebrating their 93rd year!  Gates opened up this past weekend and remain open until September 27th.

LACF

Known as a trendsetter and entertainment mecca for fair goers, the LA County fair offers culinary delights, favorite bands of multiple music eras, fascinating art exhibits, relaxing wine-tasting, a frontier of exhilarating rides, unique exhibits, and even a illuminated hillside of worldwide landmarks.

Fried peanut butter covered pickles, anyone?
????????????????????????????????????

Love deep-fried Twinkies, Oreos, cheesecake, or perhaps a double-decker hamburger with Krispy Kreme buns?  This is the place to be!

There are so many attractions and things to see, one day isn't enough.  Some attractions not to miss...

Great Concerts

ZZ Tjop

Every year the LA County Fair signs on a great  variety of music acts.  Highlights include The Beach Boys, For King and Country, Kool and the Gang, ZZ Top, Justin Moore, Chicago and more!

Luminasia was definitely a highlight for our family.  The fairgrounds has a grassy hillside speckled with trees that's the perfect setting for the Luminasia exhibit.  Luminasia consists of 50+ glowing lighted structures resembling famous landmarks from around the world.  There is an extra $5 entrance fee, but it's a real delight.

Popnology

As a tech lover, I really enjoyed Ponology, a new interactive attraction design to enlighten and educate visitors on technological advances inspired by our movies, music, comic books, books, and TV shows.

LA County Fair 2014 WellConnectedMom (175)

Exhibits include the Back To the Future DeLorean car, the cycle from TRON, a replica of a rocket ship capsule from the US trip to the moon, actual electronic instruments (think bass, electric guitar, drums, etc.) to try out for yourself, a free virtual reality experience and so much more.

The Rides

LA County Fair 2014 WellConnectedMom (48)

We got a $50 wristband for the kids on the Saturday we went so they could ride as many rides as they wanted, the band offers unlimited rides until 7pm.  Our kids had a blast.

Spend the day at the fair, it's a day your whole family will enjoy.  The LA County fair is open Wednesdays through Sundays.

Ticket prices are $12 for adults and $8 for kids on weekdays.  and $20 for adults and $12 for kids on weekends.  Children 5 and under are free.  Find out about special discounts on their website.

WiFi Indoor Home Video Camera Review Offers Face Recognition + Other Security Features

Technology

This is a sponsored post

At first glance, the Simplicam from ArcSoft and powered by Closeli may seem to be just like other home security recording systems out there. A camera, some software, maybe a wall or table mount if you’re lucky, but essentially the same thing. This makes it very challenging for companies to sell and market a monitoring device that stands out. But Simplicam, which is a direct competitor of Dropcam, succeeds in differentiating itself from the sea of similar devices currently on the market today -- offering something the others do not: face recognition.

Raphael Elspas, MommyBlogExpert.com
Upon opening the box the first thing I immediately liked about Simplicam is the packaging, specifically the cubic box and the layered contents which are reminiscent of the gift-like experiential way Apple artfully presents its products to an adoring fan base.

This makes the presentation of all the various included components (the main unit and stand, cable with USB, USB outlet, wall mount and screws) and instructions feel very organized. Besides, it looks super cool and is exciting to unwrap a product in a box that is perfectly symmetrical. Everything fits compactly inside the box and is ordered to ensure that the buyer has the easiest time understanding, setting up and using the camera.

Raphael Elspas, MommyBlogExpert.com
Speaking of this being simple to use -- that is in fact how this product got its name. This camera is one of the easiest of its type to operate that I have ever seen. Unlike others, you don’t even need a computer to set it up. You just follow the clearly written instructions provided in the box and before you know it, you can have live footage streaming to your computer or smartphone.

“But why do I need one of these?” you may ask as you contemplate making the Simplicam your most recent connected home purchase. I can think of quite a few reasons. Have to work late when your kids get home from school? Just use this gadget to have two-way talk with your sons and daughters to make sure they stay on task; you can even help them with their homework. Want to hear and be able to see your pet while you’re away from home? The Simplicam has you covered there, too.

See how Simplicam works...

This device is equipped with night vision which is another great asset. But my favorite feature by far would have to be the facial recognition, going over and beyond the functionality of a simple motion dectector which can't tell the difference between a human burglar and the family dog running laps around the house when the daily mail is dropped into your mailbox.

You can train the Simplicam which features special facial recognition software to recognize up to ten people’s faces. This may not seem like such a big deal. But, if an unapproved person gains entry to your home, for example, the device is capable of immediately sending alerts straight to your smartphone when it detects there is a stranger or unusual motion or noise inside your house.

Raphael Elspas, MommyBlogExpert.com
I personally wish we'd known about this product sooner. My mom points out that it's perfect for all those "not me" moments that every family with kids knows about. It's good for michievious pets too. One time our 12 pound dog Dexter jumped onto the kitchen counter when we were in another room and ate an entire tray of homebaked Baklava that was bigger than him. If we had the Simplicam we could have caught him in the act and made the proper correction on the spot. Besides, to this day, I'd still like to see with my own eyes how in the world that little dog made that record Superman-style high jump onto the kitchen counter!

If you’ve ever felt like you wish you could watch what was going on at home when you were away, or wanted an extra security system that is basically undetectable, then I highly recommend looking into the Simplicam.

Raphael Elspas, MommyBlogExpert.com
What you need to use Simplicam
  • A smartphone, tablet or computer running iOS 7+ or Android 4+
  • Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n: WEP, WPA, WPA2-personal encryption supported
  • High-speed Internet connection, such as DSL or cable with upload speed above 1 Mbps for each camera
While you can always view live video and the device includes 11 free days of monitoring, if you want to access archived recorded video in the cloud you will also need to subscribe to 1 of 3 Closeli Recording Services plans. These range in price from $49.99 to $229.99 per year.

About Simplicam

Simplicam, from ArcSoft of Fremont, California, is beautifully designed, well made, easy to use, and has a bunch of features that most of its competitors lack. Configured to run in the U.S. only, it retails for $149.99 and may be purchased direct from Simplicam.com and from Amazon; it is not available in stores. Animal lovers especially will appreciate knowing that the company has placed two of their Simplicams inside the animal living quarters at San Francisco SPCA to share video with the public and help match adoptable dogs and cats with their forever homes.
