It's been 14 years, but in many ways it seems only yesterday. Our Nation was shattered in a matter of minutes on that very gray day. But immediately we pulled together as Americans and we've grown STRONGER and more patriotic as each memorial year passes.

What is Rosh Hashanah?

Unlike the secular New Year many celebrate with New Year's Eve parties on December 31st, Rosh Hashanah is experienced by going to synagogue to deeply reflect upon our good and bad deeds during the past year and to ask for G-d's forgiveness for what we did wrong and his guidance to be a better person in the coming year. Though it is intensively spiritual and retrospective, it is also a festive time of elborate meals, entertaining and quality time with family and friends -- and crafts are definitely apropo to add to the holiday's significance.

Pomegranate Paper Box

The pomegranate is a popular symbol of Rosh Hashanah because it is said there are 613 seeds in every piece of fruit, the same number of mitzvahs (positive and negative deeds in the Torah, our Bible). It also symbolizes that we hope to come before G-d to be judged for our abundant good deeds. Apple Felt Coasters

Apples are also traditional for Rosh Hashanah as we dip them in honey at the table to wish everyone a sweet new year. These Apple Felt Coasters from Purl Bee are so festive for fall and would really take your table decor to the next level. Despite how complicated this handsewing craft may look, these pretty table accessories are actually very easy to make. Even easier is to simply cut out apple shapes from yellow, green, red and white felt, glue them together and add the seed details with a fabric friendly marking pen.

The LA County Fair, one of the largest fairs in the country, is celebrating their 93rd year!  Gates opened up this past weekend and remain open until September 27th.

Known as a trendsetter and entertainment mecca for fair goers, the LA County fair offers culinary delights, favorite bands of multiple music eras, fascinating art exhibits, relaxing wine-tasting, a frontier of exhilarating rides, unique exhibits, and even a illuminated hillside of worldwide landmarks.

Fried peanut butter covered pickles, anyone?

Love deep-fried Twinkies, Oreos, cheesecake, or perhaps a double-decker hamburger with Krispy Kreme buns?  This is the place to be!

There are so many attractions and things to see, one day isn't enough.  Some attractions not to miss...

Great Concerts

Every year the LA County Fair signs on a great  variety of music acts.  Highlights include The Beach Boys, For King and Country, Kool and the Gang, ZZ Top, Justin Moore, Chicago and more!

Luminasia

Luminasia was definitely a highlight for our family.  The fairgrounds has a grassy hillside speckled with trees that's the perfect setting for the Luminasia exhibit.  Luminasia consists of 50+ glowing lighted structures resembling famous landmarks from around the world.  There is an extra $5 entrance fee, but it's a real delight.

Popnology

As a tech lover, I really enjoyed Ponology, a new interactive attraction design to enlighten and educate visitors on technological advances inspired by our movies, music, comic books, books,and TV shows.

Exhibits include the Back To the Future DeLorean car, the cycle from TRON, a replica of a rocket ship capsule from the US trip to the moon, actual electronic instruments (think bass, electric guitar, drums, etc.) to try out for yourself, a free virtual reality experience and so much more.

The Rides

We got a $50 wristband for the kids on the Saturday we went so they could ride as many rides as they wanted, the band offers unlimited rides until 7pm.  Our kids had a blast.

Spend the day at the fair, it's a day your whole family will enjoy.  The LA County fair is open Wednesdays through Sundays.

Ticket prices are $12 for adults and $8 for kids on weekdays.  and $20 for adults and $12 for kids on weekends.  Children 5 and under are free.  Find out about special discounts on their website.
