How to Glamp in Your Backyard This Summer

Glamping made its debut in the United Kingdom back in 2005 and is quickly becoming as popular here in the USA as well as Canada. Combining the words glamour and camping into one, this is just what you'd think: a luxurious camping vacation experience with the amenities typically found at the finest hotels and resorts.

Backyard Glamping this Summer

In this post I'm going to share how easy and inexpensive it is to create your own glamping experience at home in the privacy of your backyard or on a road trip at a public campground.

Backyard Glamping Bed on Lawn

With nightly rates starting at $250 on up to over $1000, these glamping destinations can be prohibitively expensive for the average family. Why should only the wealthy or well-traveled have access to the most luxe, wonderful way to relax, enjoy the outdoors and sleep under the stars?

You can easily replicate the most luxurious glamping resorts that can be found coast to coast in the woods, on top of Manhattan roof tops, on the beach, in the desert and in many other wild places. With imagination, a little creativity and a few basics you'll be creating a glamping experience all your own.

Backyard DIY Glamping Camping Ideas

DIY Glamping How To

Instead of just watching everyone else play outside in style, join the fun and build your exclusive DIY private glamping outdoor hideaway centered around the Bestway Inflatable 17" Queen Mattress which is available at Walmart for just $139 + shipping. That's less than even a single night at one of those fancy glamping places you can stay at on a vacation with the kids.

Just think. With very little effort you can have a fabulous, extremely comfortable staycation in your own yard, balcony, or roof top garden. Or you can reserve a space at a campground equipped with electricity. Either way, as long as the space you choose isn't wet, rocky or dusty and you have access to a traditional 110 - 112V electrical outlet or power generator to inflate this portable blow-up mattress, you can be relaxing and enjoying some quality time together before you know it.

Backyard Glamping Luxury Air Mattress Bed

You can easily and quickly set up your very own glamping outdoor room in so many different ways to suit individual preferences, simply by bringing the things you and other family members love outside from the house that you most associate with comfort. For me, I absolutely adore sleeping with 800-thread sheets, a fluffy white down comforter and down pillows which I simply brought outside from the bed in the house.

It literally took me only about 10 minutes from start to finish to create an lovely outdoor space to relax. First, making sure there was no moisture in our lawn, I laid down an old sheet on top of our grass to protect the bottom of the mattress from getting dirty (a Queen size tarp would work equally well).

Next, I carried the surprisingly light mattress outside, then I plugged in the built-in AlwayszAire air pump (ETL approved) and pushed a button, choosing from one of three different levels of bed firmness. The air pump worked automatically, continuously monitoring and maintaining the proper pressure. Just a few minutes later, the mattress was fully inflated, rising a full 17" off the ground. I pushed the button again, to turn off the air pump. Then, I made the bed with my sheets, comforter and pillows just how I like it in the backyard among our citrus trees and garden. That's it.

Backyard Glamping Woman Sleeping

The true test, though, was lying down on this outdoor sleeping place to try out this new bed first-hand. To be honest, it was so comfy, I didn't want to get up and write this review at my desktop back in the house. The best part is this mattress will stay comfortable and inflated all night and won't be sagging in the morning when you wake up. Deflating is also a breeze, at the push of a button. In no time, the airbed returns to its original compact size, taking up very little space and making it very easy to store when not in use.

The next time I create a glamp in the yard, I think I'll add small night tables on each side of the bed so there is a place for my hubbie and I to stash the books we're reading. I'm also planning to string some pretty white market-style lights on trees around where the bed is situated to create a romantic feel. When the stars come up, I can simply switch off these outdoor lights and we can both enjoy the sparkling late-summer night sky and cool air.

Backyard Wild Mushrooms Growing on Lawn

So what are you waiting for? Get outdoors and enjoy the nature that surrounds us. It's time to glamp out and create your own customized outdoor sleeping space!

Isaiah Mustafa Old Spice Boys Videos

Parenting

New Video Series for Tween, Teen Boys Tackles Hygiene

If you are the mother or father of a tween or teen boy you are probably a bit uncomfortable when it comes to having the talk with your son about personal hygiene. Believe me, as the mom of two sons, I've been there and done that, twice. The reality is that if our young men aren't maintaining the proper hygiene to manage body odor, even if they can't smell it, we can. They smell pungent to put it politely, or to be blunt: they stink.

School Lockers Boys Talking Hygiene

MBE partnered with Old Spice for this post

Now there's an easy way for parents, especially us moms, to bring up that delicate subject, thanks to the new humorous and informative School of Swagger video series from Old Spice starring Isaiah Mustafa, who has a huge fan base among today's young people.

School of Swagger Premieres

As a parent, I could not be more excited to introduce you and your sons to this free new Old Spice series which just launched. Mustafa, former college football player and NFL practice squad wide receiver, has been the face of Old Spice as The Man Your Man Could Smell Like since 2010. Currently playing the werewolf Luke Garroway on the hit show Shadowhunters, he is also an experienced Dad as the father of a daughter.

This School Of Swagger multi episode online curriculum program is both entertaining and informative as well as a modern day parenting tool moms will appreciate.

Finally, for the first time, there's a medium that speaks directly to boys 10-years old and up in a lingo they can relate to as they begin experiencing the bodily changes like sweat, facial hair growth, and more associated with puberty.

In fact, Mustafa is virtually in every young mens' locker room now, talking straight guy talk to all the young budding men out there he aims to inspire and inform.

In the introductory video in the series, accomplished Mustafa, who now can add comedian and educator to his impressive credentials thanks to this project, is perfectly cast to present this educational public outreach initiative. The four-part new video series features live action and comedy between Mustafa and a tween boy, a very funny script loaded with valuable information, and wonderful animation mixed in.

Simply put, the full range of awkward boy-to-man issues are addressed, ranging from body cleanliness and proper deodorant use, to facial hair and shaving that's presented in a way that appeals to tween and younger teen guys.

Isaiah Mustafa Recalls Road to Manhood

From the moment I sat down for a one-on-one interview with Mustafa at the premiere in Hollywood of the new Old Spice School of Swagger series, the conversation flowed easily. Down to earth and genuine, this Renaissance Man grew up in Southern California and originally wanted to be a high school teacher until his career unexpectedly took off in a totally new and life changing direction.

During our chat Mustafa chuckles as he recounts how much he giggled and laughed through most of the video series shoot. He also shares a few personal memories of his own awkwardness, boy-man conflicts and challenges when his was a kid.

"During junior high," Mustafa tells me, "like all the other guys my age I was insecure talking about adolescent personal body issues such as the sweat stains my friends and I all were experiencing for the first time. At that stage, to deal with the uncomfortable awkward hormonal and physical changes we were going through, we called this kind of sweating 'Pitting Out.' Later, I attended Santa Clara High School in Oxnard, California. As we quickly grew from boys into men -- those same sweat stains morphed from embarrassment into a sort of badge of honor showing off how fit and confident we felt."

New Old Spice Invisible Spray for Fall

The School of Swagger video series is just the beginning to help you guide your tween boys as they navigate the journey of growing into a man, starting when the hormones start to rage. Further catering to the future men of tomorrow, Old Spice has also expanded their collection of personal care products for the male youth market just in time for back to school season.

The newest mom-approved product in the Old Spice Wild Collection is Invisible Spray anti-perspirant and deodorant. This goes on dry and provides up to 48-hour protection. Now widely available online and in drug stores, food stores and mass merchandisers in three fresh, manly scents including Bearglove, Swagger and Pure Sport.

Old Spice Wild Collection for Tween Teen Boys

Old Spice Wild Collection

The complete mom-approved Old Spice Wild Collection of men's body care products features anti-perspirants, deodorants, body washes, body sprays and shampoos in a range of wild scents including

  • Hawkridge - Outwits stink with scents of sandalwood and vanilla

Now what are you waiting for? Tune into the School of Swagger series now and check the videos out. Once you approve, don't forget to remind, your tween son to take a look, too. These hilarious vignettes are really meant for the 10- to 12-year old mentality and will no doubt entertain as well as inform him and his friends about what's really going on with all the crazy awkward body changes he's been noticing lately.

Big Savings for Back to School - Finding Best Textbook Deals for High School and College

Education

With August nearly midway through, back to school is already here, or will be very soon.   Whether your kids are in high school or college, families on a budget want to know the secret to saving money because as in years past, our children are going to be needing (and wanting) all kinds of stuff this fall -- new clothes, school supplies, and textbooks.

In fact that last item on the list can be the most pricey of all.  According to consumer and money-saving expert Andrea Woroch, school books are expensive and prices tend to rise at four times the rate of inflation and the going rate now is $900 per studnet annually and climbing for new books.

With four kids in out-of-state colleges at the same time now -- including my triplets plus their big brother who is one year older -- I've learned first-hand that those astronomical costs for text books can really add up if you and/or your student don't shop smartly.  Why spend close to a thousand dollars or more for each student, when they can have the same exact books for hundreds less?

Woroch's strategy, which my sons and daughters have already put to the test shopping for their own college textbooks, is simple and logical. The key is to avoid buying new books at retail stores and, in the case of university students, use the college bookstore only as a last resort because even gently used book can be had for much less money elsewhere.

7 Ways to Save BIG on Text Books

To get you started saving on one of the highest expenses associated with your child's education, here are some ideas for thinking creatively to save hundreds of dollars on books this fall.

1. Wait Until You've Seen the Syllabus
You may not even need all those books that are on the teacher's class list.  So,  why not wait until the student's first day of class to decide on what's really necessary.

2. Rent Books From a Service
Examples include: Chegg.com, BookRenter.com and CampusBookRentals.com  Go this route and you'll pay roughly half the purchase price, often with free shipping included.

3. Don't buy New, Purchase Used Textbooks Instead
Over the years, buying used, rather than new has grown increasingly popular.  This trend has its roots, at least in part,  in the current movement toward greater eco responsibility.  Remember to shop eBay as well as Amazon, of course.  But also check out the growing number of used online textbook companies -- such as Half.com, Textbooks.com and eCampus.com  Don't overlook visiting the many traditional retail book stores (both chains and mom and pop shops) that also sell previously owned texts alongside new books, either.

4. Download Free & Discounted Textbooks
Few classes require students to read every page of a textbook, so why not download only the
necessary portion from websites like VitalSource.com or MIT Open Courseware? You can also tap into Project Gutenberg which has scanned in hundreds of free-domain books for use on e-readers such as Kindle, Android, iPhone, iPad, and other portable devices.

5. Don't Purchase the Whole Package
Federal regulations no longer allow publishers to combine textbooks with add-ons, such as CD-ROMs and workbooks.  Before you buy an entire bundle, check with your professor or instructor.

6. Shop Online
When you buy online often this means you'll find reduced book prices and low or free shipping.  You'll save even more if you download a coupon code from a site like CouponSherpa.com and then purchase at new textbook sellers such as  Amazon, BarnesAndNoble.com, AbeBooks.com, and various others.

7. Other Thinking Out-of-the-Box Ways to Save
Another buy cheaper option is to purchase an earlier textbook edition  Except for subjects where there are major advances in their respective fields -- these books probably won't be that different from the edition that's just off the presses.  You might also shop at swap meets, thrift stores and garage sales for great book bargains.

Woroch concludes by reminding parents who will be shopping for their kids and college students who will be buying on their own to always compare prices and shop around for textbooks.

"Websites such as CampusBooks.com, BigWords.com and AllBookstores.com make the process much easier," Woroch says.
